SYMPOSIUM: WE ARE NOT YOUR DEMOISELLES, KW Berlin, 10 AM – 5 PM

Candice Breitz, Melissa Gira Grant, Änne Söll and Nosipho Vidima talk about the stigmatization of sex work in the context of the exhibition CANDICE BREITZ: SEX WORK (Salon Berlin of Museum Frieda Burda). Moderated by Monopol editor-in-chief Elke Buhr, the symposium includes a visit to the exhibition and an introduction to the work of Candice Breitz by the artist herself.

JULIAN CHARRIÈRE, “AS WE USED TO FLOAT“, Berlinische Galerie, 6 – 11 PM

Julian Charrière, whose work is also featured in the upcoming exhibition WILDERNESS at the SCHIRN, has won the GASAG art prize. He has developed a multimedia spatial installation for Berlinische Galerie that takes viewers under the surface of the Pacific Ocean. At Berghain he presents his film “An Invitation to Disappear” at a late hour, followed by the release party of the accompanying album by producer Inland (alias Ed Davenport).

AGNIESZKA POLSKA, “THE DEMON’S BRAIN“, HAMBURGER BAHNHOF

Those who didn’t make it to the opening of Agnieszka Polska’s exhibition in the context of the 9th Preis der Nationalgalerie at Hamburger Bahnhof the previous day should catch up and see the Polish artist’s new multi-channel video installation in the Historical Hall. Two of her works were also on view at the Schirn last year as part of the PEACE exhibition.

MICHEL MAJERUS: HOME VIDEOS, SELECTED BY JORDAN WOLFSON, Michel Majerus Estate

In the former studio of Michel Majerus, who died far too young at 35, his estate presents a video compiled by artist Jordan Wolfson. It features Michel Majerus’ personal archive and provides insights into the visionary’s influences.

ART BERLIN - FAIR FOR MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART, opening 4 – 8 PM

Especially exciting this year: The abc, now renamed ART BERLIN, has found a new partner in Art Cologne and a new location at Berlin Tempelhof Airport. After the opening the fair will be hosting a BBQ. September 27 – 30, 2018.

GALLERY OPENINGS AND BERLIN ART PRIZE CEREMONY

A good start to the openings tour is Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler in Kreuzberg. The gallery is showing paintings by Alexander Carver, Pieter Schoolwerth and Avery Singer. Afterwards you can visit Galerie Thomas Schulte showing paintings by Frankfurt-based artist Jonas Weichsel. And a group show with works by Alicja Kwade, Ahmet Ögüt and Katharina Sieverding and others opens at Kunstraum PS120. Those who manage to make their way back to Kreuzberg shouldn’t miss the Berlin Art Prize award ceremony being held at midnight and the party afterwards.

BERLIN ART PRIZE CEREMONY at midnight, The Shelf, Prinzenstrasse 34

AKADEMIE DER KÜNSTE: TOURS OF ADRIAN PIPER AND THE PICTURE CELLAR

Akademie der Künste is opening its Picture Cellar for the first time, which houses evidence of a young, oppositional East Berlin painting movement. The murals from the 1950s can only be visited in the context of the hourly tours offered. There will be a curator’s tour of the exhibition “Käthe Kollwitz Prize 2018: Adrian Piper” at 3 PM.

ELIF SAYDAM & VERA PALME: COLT JONNER’S DESECRATION OF DESCENT, BROKEN DIMANCHE PRESS. MARATHON BOOK READING AND BBQ, 2 – 8 PM.

The publishing house and project space “Broken Dimanche Press” presents the project “Colt Jonner’s Desecration of Descent” by Städel alumni Elif Saydam and Vera Palme. To conclude Berlin Art Week, the space will host a marathon book reading and a BBQ on Sunday.
