A citizen of the world, a Surrealist, and a painter of monumental spaces, the Chilean artist Roberto Matta (1911–2002) captivated and inspired many of his contemporaries with his expansive body of work. René Magritte once remarked that Matta’s paintings were “a thousand times better than Miró’s.” Still relatively little known in Germany, Matta’s retrospective at the SCHIRN focuses on the inner landscapes he created since 1938. Through these visionary works, Matta imagines a new society — one in which freedom remains alive, rather than becoming a mere statue.
