SURREALISM IN MEXICO

SELF-DESCRIPTION

On the exhibition FANTASTISCHE FRAUEN. Sixty portraits of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in her paintings. She shows this self-image in front of large sheets of paper. She looks seriously at her viewers. A monkey sits on her right shoulder. With her back arched, the black cat on her left shoulder is getting ready to jump. The artist wears her plaits pinned up, a ribbon with two silver butterflies is tied to her hair. Mysterious hybrid creatures of dragonfly and flower fly around her head.

MANY SURREALISTS DEALT WITH THEIR OWN IDENTITY IN THEIR WORKS

They slipped into different roles, transformed themselves into animals or fantasy creatures and expressed their deepest feelings or desires. In her self-portraits Frida Kahlo often wears great hairstyles decorated with flowers, coloured ribbons or small animals. You can do that too, combine different materials to create an imaginative hairband!

YOU NEED: A HAIRBAND, PIPE CLEANER OR THICK WIRE, FLOWERS, LEAVES OR BRANCHES, BEADS AND VARIOUS HOUSEHOLD MATERIALS

INSTRUCTIONS

Attach flowers, leaves, branches or other small objects to your hairband with the pipe cleaners or a piece of thick wire. Wrap the wire tightly around the headband several times before tying the object. Make sure that both ends of the wire do not touch your head when you put the headband on. You can string beads or other things with a small hole.
