THE FANTASTIC IN THE EVERYDAY

DISCOVER FACES AND FORMS

To go with the exhibition FANTASTIC WOMEN. Your camera allows you to capture special moments: the victory at your latest sports tournament or a birthday party with family and friends. That said, it’s just as worth taking a look at your everyday surroundings.schaue genau hin!

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK!

In this photograph by Emila Medková, an unusually shaped stone plays the starring role. With eyes and hair, the stone looks like a human face. In her images, the artist uses things that are very familiar to us but assembles or photographs them in a novel way from an unusual angle. This way, she reveals what otherwise remains invisible and gives simple things a new, unexpected meaning.

Are you bored at home? Fed up of seeing the same old things around you? Then close your eyes, and as you open them take a new look at your surroundings! With your imagination, unremarkable household objects can become a fantastical puppet figure.

INTRODUCTION

The long-handled brush will form the body of your puppet figure. Now use scraps of fabric or paper to create clothing for your figure and attach it to the brush. To add form to the clothing, attach a chopstick to the handle to make a cross and lay baking parchment over it. Or cut out some big hands to attach to two kebab skewers and use wool or gift ribbon to tie this onto the brush so that the arms of your puppet can move. For your puppet’s face, you can either draw the features or shape them using other materials such as drawing pins, paperclips or buttons. Take inspiration from our puppet figures and find other great materials at home to create your own crazy puppet!

TIPS

  • You won’t be able to use your brush again next time you clean the house; ask your mum and dad first which household items you can use for your puppet
  • Are puppets not your thing? Then look around the house for different utility items and put them together to form a fantastical creature, which you can then photograph. That way, you will still be able to use the items afterwards – you can find a few ideas in our picture gallery below.
  • For other crazy fantastic creatures, why not cast a glance at our instructions for the ARTISTS’ GAME: CADAVRE EXQUIS? Perhaps you can persuade your parents or siblings to help you create a fantastical random creature using colored pens and paper
