FILM SERIES – HIP HOP IN THE DFF

In cooperation with the SCHIRN, the DFF - Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum is presenting a three-month film series to accompany the exhibition THE CULTURE, which highlights the influence of hip hop in all its facets: from documentaries about early hip hop culture, to the use of music as an accompanying soundtrack and film biopics up to acting attempts by some rappers.

Four friends from Harlem – Bishop, Q, Steel, and Raheem – make ends meet through petty crimes and navigate their seemingly hopeless lives. To get a larger sum of money, they plan a robbery on a supermarket. However, Q aims for a career as a DJ and has a gig scheduled for the evening of the break-in. Bishop, the gang's leader, refuses to accept "no" for an answer. This nerve-wracking gangster film is not only known for its hip-hop soundtrack but also marks the acting debut of the legendary rapper Tupac Shakur.

Salvatore "Sal" Fragione operates a pizzeria in the heart of Brooklyn, a predominantly African-American neighborhood, adorned with a Wall of Fame featuring only Italian celebrities. When resident Buggin' Out learns of this, he starts a revolt, firmly believing that in a Black neighborhood, Black individuals should also be honored on such a wall. Alongside Public Enemy's activist anthem "Fight the Power," Spike Lee's political masterpiece is underscored by a memorable rap, jazz, and R&B soundtrack.

Los Angeles: Following several personal tragedies, experiences of racial discrimination, and a sense of general hopelessness, four friends find themselves compelled to commit a bank robbery. After the first heist is successful, the women desire more money, but this leads them into even greater troubles. The predominantly female-cast heist film impresses with thrilling action and a lively hip-hop and R&B soundtrack, with the successful rapper Queen Latifah embodying one of the protagonists.

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON tells the success story of the infamous West Coast rap group N.W.A, consisting of Dr. Dre, Easy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella, who popularized gangsta rap with their aggressive, controversial, politically charged lyrics and their confrontations with the police. With brutal beats and strong acting performances, a central moment in American hip-hop history is given a fitting and entertaining tribute.

In 1990s Detroit, the white rapper Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith Jr. tries to make a name for himself in the city's battle rap scene to escape his difficult family circumstances and the poverty of his trailer park. The plot is loosely based on the life story of the famous rapper Eminem, who also steps into the lead role. For the title song "8 Mile," Eminem became the first rapper to win an Oscar® for Best Original Song.

In 2010, dancers Martha Nabwire and Niki Tsappos participated in Juste Debout in Paris, the largest international street dance competition. Together, they became world champions in hip hop – the first time ever that women won this prize. The demanding tournament not only tested the friendship of Martha and Niki but also their passion for hip hop. The documentary focuses on the role of women in hip hop, who are often severely underrepresented. Breaking, as a dance discipline, will make its first appearance at the Olympic Summer Games in Paris this year.
