This expan\u00adsive instal\u00adla\u00adtion consists of four used multi\u00adpronged grabs, typi\u00adcally found on construc\u00adtion sites and scrap yards. In Selma Selman\u2019s appro\u00adpri\u00ada\u00adtion, the massive machines are trans\u00adformed into flower-like kinetic sculp\u00adtures powered by a motor, their blos\u00adsoms slowly opening and closing. Inside, they reveal paint\u00adings by the artist. \u201cFlowers of Life\u201d ties in with Selman\u2019s well-known works with scrap metal, \u201cPaint\u00adings on Metal\u201d (since 2014), which oscil\u00adlate between painting and sculp\u00adture and refer to her family\u2019s scrap metal trade. The sensual, floral inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion of \u201cFlowers of Life\u201d reverses mascu\u00adline and femi\u00adnine conno\u00adta\u00adtions, at the same time revealing women as the key driving force of the commu\u00adnity. The inten\u00adsive collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with her mother espe\u00adcially revolves around auto\u00adbi\u00adog\u00adraphy, visi\u00adbility, and eman\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtion as a Roma woman, and has already been reflected in numerous works. The SCHIRN presents the new film \u201cCrossing the Blue Bridge\u201d (2024; 27:15 min.) in a two-screen instal\u00adla\u00adtion. \u201cCrossing the Blue Bridge\u201d exam\u00adines the lingering effects of histor\u00adical trauma, as well as care, courage, and resis\u00adtance. Selman inhabits the role of her mother and reen\u00adacts her memo\u00adries.<br><br>The film is based on her mother\u2019s expe\u00adri\u00adences during the Bosnian war: On a day during a cease\u00adfire in 1994, her mother went into town with Selman\u2019s sister to find food. On the way home, they had to cross Biha\u0107\u2019s Alija Izetbe\u00adgovi\u0107 Bridge, also called the Blue Bridge, which was strewn with corpses and animal carcasses. While trying to simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adously cover her child\u2019s eyes and carry the heavy basket of food, the strong winds blew her hair around her face, obscuring her view. Selman recre\u00adates this image in her film, linking it to figures from Greek mythology, among others, in a haunt\u00adingly recited text in English, Bosnian, and Romani. The draw\u00adings depict inti\u00admate obser\u00adva\u00adtions of female figures whose faces and bodies meta\u00admor\u00adphose into surreal hybrids with fluid iden\u00adti\u00adties, expanding and taking on abstract forms. The pene\u00adtrating gaze of an eye, a recur\u00adring motif in Selman\u2019s work resur\u00adfaces in these pictures as a refer\u00adence to iden\u00adtity and social systems of codi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion. Here, too, Selman addresses the possi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties and limi\u00adta\u00adtions of what she can be\u2014 a woman, an artist, a Roma person, an inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adally successful star, a daughter, a Muslim, a Euro\u00adpean. class='ho-sd-body'>Two live perfor\u00admances by the artist will take place over the course of the exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion. For the opening of the exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion, Selman will present \u201cYou Have No Idea\u201d (since 2015). Depending on the situ\u00ada\u00adtion, the haunting perfor\u00admance can last between just five minutes and an hour and a half. With her contin\u00aduous repe\u00adti\u00adtion of the phrase that gives the piece its title, she addresses social clas\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion and confronts the audi\u00adence with their subcon\u00adscious assump\u00adtions about other people. In a reading Selman will perform the work \u201cLetters to Omer\u201d (since 2021).
