It is nothing that at some point politely knocks on the door, introduces itself, and says: \u201cGood day, incidentally, I\u2019m the strange.\u201d It already inhabits the domain of the familiar. The uncanny presumably starts where feeling is swifter than concepts. Something we thought long since repressed and done with unsettles and we suddenly find ourselves facing it again. Freud described this return of the familiar in 1919 in his essay \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/dn760004.eu.archive.org\/0\/items\/freud-uncanny_001\/freud-uncanny_001_text.pdf\">The Uncanny<\/a>,\u201d Lacan pulled the rug out from under our own mirror reflection in his 1949 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lamarre-mediaken.com\/Site\/EAST_527_files\/Lacan_Mirror_Stage.pdf\">text<\/a>, and Masahiro Mori gave the whole thing a technical spin in 1970 in his essay on the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/the-uncanny-valley\">Uncanny Valley<\/a><\/em>. Since then, we have known that the more similar a machine is to us, the more than closeness prompts repulsion. AI intensifies this old irritation. It produces faces, voices, memories, images, even ersatz-humans. A neuronal network then reconstructs images from this. Onto the screens pop fleeting, unstable shapes: not what was actually imagined, but what the machine thinks the imagined looked like. The result is an uncanny interference. The inner world becomes visible without becoming really tangible.
