Sticking on your scrolling fingers like sourdough, right-wing content is difficult to avoid on social media. She was struck by how easily seemingly harmless images led to far-right content. For her, this revealed how the digital, often AI-infused, public sphere has become a space where the far right appropriates established visual traditions.<br><br>Her work \u201cMetapolitics in Domestic Disguise\u201d (2022) reacts to this phenomenon. Printed on linen, images of women in domestic settings are embroidered with phrases identifying the features of fascism described by Umberto Eco in his essay <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ur-Fascism\"><em>Ur-Fascism<\/em><\/a>. Rather than reproducing the message of those imageries, Lambers exposes their often-subtle connection to the ideology of the New German Right.<br><br>What role can art play in interrupting, exposing, and critically examining AI\u2019s contribution to the spread of right-wing ideology? This ambitious question lay at the heart of the workshop <em>Generating Counter-Publics? \u2013 Art, AI, and Right-Wing Dynamics<\/em>, where Rahel grote Lambers presented her artistic practice. or &#8220;AI flooding&#8221;\u2014has become an increasingly important tool in the hands of authoritarian actors. Holding on to the political concept of counter-publics as alternative sites to the hegemonic production of public opinion, the workshop explored whether art can still generate spaces of critical reflection within a media landscape fundamentally reshaped by digital platforms and artificial intelligence.<br><br>Among the workshop\u2019s many contributions, a panel discussion featuring Anne Simone Kiesel, Katrin K\u00f6ppert and Antonio Somaini tackled this question from different perspectives. Working as both a scholar and a curator, Somaini argued for a new form of visual literacy capable of understanding what he calls \u201cinfrastructural images\u201d: highly mediated images that compress the infrastructural layers from which they emerge.<br><br>K\u00f6ppert, who also delivered a compelling keynote on the fragmentation of the digital public sphere drawing on Black radical thought such as Sylvia Winter, Zakiyyah Iman Jackson, Rizvana Bradley a.o., emphasized the central role of infrastructure at a moment when processes of fascization intersect with neoliberal individualism. Rather than merely reproducing the conditions of its own production, she argued, art should create alternative infrastructures through its very making.<br><br>Art historian and critic Anne Simone Kiesel pointed to Mimi \u1eccn\u1ee5\u1ecdha\u2019s \u201cGround Truths\u201d (2025) as an example of this challenge. The 16-minute docu-fiction film follows \u1eccn\u1ee5\u1ecdha\u2019s attempt to develop a machine-learning model capable of identifying plausible locations of mass graves of Black people across Texas. Invited to engage with the layered and politically contested history of the Dondorf Druckerei, the artist and scholar created a film that reflects on the possibilities and limitations of AI when working with archival materials to write contemporary history. <br><br>As Dominik Laute and I have argued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schirn.de\/en\/schirnmag\/superform-und-supermeme-gedanken-zu-thomas-bayrles-kunst-und-meme-culture\/\">elsewhere<\/a>, memes often conceal and perpetuate particular perspectives by presenting them as universally valid. The rise of \u201cmeme wars\u201d is therefore hardly surprising. As the workshop\u2019s title suggests, artistic practices that aim at countering such dynamics of digital fascization cannot do so on the surface of content generation.
