She then worked with Adrien Chuttarsing and Prudence Castelot (Filmatters) to tackle the unique challenges of this project and the troubling possibility of using AI to fill the blind spots in history.<br><br>In conversation with Antonio Somaini, the three of them further unpack these questions and reflect on the implications of their approach.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class='wp-block-ho-pattern ' data-pattern='ho\/text-magazin-interview'>\n\n<div  class='container-fluid margin-bottom-7'>\n\n<div  class='row'>\n\n<div  class='col col-xs-12 col-md-6 col-md-offset-6 padding-bottom-5'>\t<p class='ho-sd-body'><strong>When I first discovered the Dondorf Druckerei, the temporary location of the SCHIRN in which the exhibition &#8220;The World Through AI&#8221; is presented, I was immediately fascinated by its layered and troubled history. Founded as a printing factory by the Jewish family Dondorf in 1889\/1890, it was sold in 1928 to the Union-Druckerei, the printing house linked to the SPD that published the socialist-democratic newspaper Volksstimme. During the Nazi period, the building became the site where for a few years the nazi newspaper Frankfurter Volksblatt was printed. The Volksstimme resumed its publication after the war until 1959, when the building was incorporated in the University of Frankfurt, where it hosted the institutes of Art Education and Music Education.<br><br>As curator of the exhibition, I decided to commission you, Ania Ania Szczepa\u0144ska, a historian and filmmaker based in Paris, for a new work that deals with the history of the building while reflecting at the same time on what it means for a historian to be faced with all the possibilities and the dangers introduced by AI. For the AI-related parts of her film, Ania worked with you \u2013 Prudence Castelot and Adrien Chuttarsing, authors of the interface and applied research laboratory Filmatters. <br><br>As a media theorist, I was particularly intrigued by the fact that the building hosted a printing factory, where texts and images were industrially processed and reproduced in order to be circulated across society, shaping beliefs and opinions. For me, in other words, the Dondorf Druckerei was a vast text- and image-processing machine used for political purposes. What aspects of the history of this building and of the family who inaugurated it interested you the most? <br><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div  class='col col-md-5 col-md-offset-7 col-xs-11 col-xs-offset-1'>\n\n<div  class='ho-tag is-primary is-small margin-bottom-3'>\t<p class='ho-tag-label'>Ania Szczepa\u0144ska<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>I saw the exhibition &#8220;The World Through AI&#8221; at the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris in June 2025, just as I was finishing my documentary film \u201cSous la terre\u201d [Unearthed], which focused on the archaeological excavations carried out in 1967 at Auschwitz-Birkenau and the 16,470 everyday objects discovered by Polish archaeologists. I was deeply preoccupied with the question of the materiality of history, the traces that have come down to us, and of course the sense of loss faced by anyone attempting to connect with the past \u2013 first and foremost, the historian. <br><br>&#8220;The World Through AI&#8221; challenged my usual ways of thinking by evoking a range of diverse and contradictory emotions that I believe many of us feel towards AI: on the one hand, a certain intellectual fascination, and on the other, the fear that the massive falsification of archives that AI enables may destabilize our relation with history and memory. In the case of the Holocaust archives, this possibility of altering archival materials (through colorization, upscaling, image and video generation) was terrifying because it touched on vertiginous ethical questions. The institutions working on these memories are now well aware of this, and indeed they alerted us to the issue and showed us several news articles on it, for example in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hessenschau.de\/kultur\/holocaust-und-ns-verbrechen-klicken-sich-gut---gedenkstaetten-wehren-sich-gegen-ki-fakes-v1,gedenkstaetten-kritisieren-ki-bilder-100.html\">Hessenschau, in January 2026<\/a>.<br><br>For your exhibition at the SCHIRN in Frankfurt, you asked me to make a film exploring the relationship between a historian-filmmaker and AI today. You suggested that I create a work that builds on my previous research into images as both sources and agents of history, without imposing any formal or thematic constraints. The carte blanche you gave me was a highly stimulating challenge, as it invited me to re-examine the tensions between AI and the writing of contemporary history, and to grapple with the way in which these various technologies are transforming our relationship with the past. As we discussed the project together, it quickly became clear to us that it was essential to take into account the specific historical context of Germany. The history of the site, which I visited in the autumn of 2026, immediately struck a chord with me. It embodied an industrial heritage representative of a flourishing nineteenth century, an economic and cultural golden age, that of a young, innovative German nation capable of integrating external populations, notably Jewish ones, in the name of an Enlightenment ideal that had become the cement of the community. Having worked on the Second World War and the memory of the Holocaust in Europe, I found it fascinating that this model, specific to German Jewry, could have been annihilated even though it was founded on this very ideal of integration. <br><br>In Frankfurt, I first spent time at the Institut f\u00fcr Stadtgeschichte to understand what remained of that period in the documents and photographic and film archives. The fate of the German-Jewish Dondorf family immediately stood out for this film because it embodied this rise and then this tragic destruction, this radical rupture from which post-war Europe is the heir. I became interested in the fate of two of the four Dondorf sisters: Clara, who had survived the Holocaust, and Helene, who was deported on 19 October 1941 with her son Richard and had died in the \u0141\u00f3d\u017a ghetto on 22 January 1942. These relationships were highly indicative of your respective sensibilities: one stemmed from an archaeology of media and techniques embodied in a layered history, whilst the other was more closely tied to the existence of a family lost due to tragic historical circumstances,  accompanied by the sense of a need to remember and to participate in the preservation of the traces of this place. <br><br>The Dondorf Druckerei thus became for us a unifying epicentre from which a geography of memory took shape, like an interface where different eras, people, communities, life trajectories, economic flows, materials and practices intersect through more or less defined connections. This family of German industrialists maintained a complex relationship with their Jewish identity, caught between respect for tradition and a strong desire to integrate into German society. In the aftermath of the war and the Holocaust, the central issue was that of financial and moral reparation. <br><br>The interface created by Adrien Chuttarsing and Prudence Castelot allowed me to navigate these source materials in a different way, sometimes rethinking the links between the documents and the archives gathered, whilst being surprised by the connections suggested by the algorithms. This process of questioning was inspiring for the film\u2019s aesthetic form and its poetic language. During my research, another crucial event was my meeting with the C\u00e4cilienchor, which, through its art of singing, took on the task of commemorating several members of the Dondorf family who had been members of the choir before being expelled because they were Jewish. They spearheaded the project to create the \u2018paving stones of memory\u2019 (Stolpersteine) in tribute to this family on the streets of Frankfurt. I was deeply moved by their commitment and by the way in which music could serve as a contemporary echo of these past wounds through a process of \u2018repair\u2019. It was their actions that inspired the film\u2019s title: \u201cReinscribing the Dondorf\u201d. <br><br>From a filmmaking perspective, it was important to me to create a dialogue between their world \u2013 captured using the tools of classic documentary cinema \u2013 and the aesthetic worlds of AI models. To put it another way, I was searching for narrative and aesthetic means to bring the worlds of AI closer to documentary cinema, whether those of analytical AI (the CLIP interface created by Prudence Castelot and Adrien Chuttarsing, which in the film I call \u2018constellation\u2019) or generative AI (the various image-generating or image-modifying models which in the film I call \u2018the beasts\u2019), that they suggested based on my requests. It was therefore a question of reappropriating these tools through my research and artistic practice and also seeing how these tools extended or came into tension with my working methods and sensibility. It was important to me to articulate more firmly my relationship with absence \u2013 of images, archives, traces \u2013 which AI systems mostly seek to fill. Rather than imposing \u2018restrictions\u2019 \u2013 which was one stage of the work \u2013 it seemed more interesting to me, in discussion with you, Adrien and Prudence, but also with the entire film team, notably with editor Annabelle Abdul, to engage with these images generated by various AI models, and to explain why these fake archives threaten our relationship with the past whilst plundering and exploiting the work of archival institutions. <br><br>In a second phase, I sought to take these tools into account and make them my own, not only to enrich our range of expression, but also to find more effective counter-powers against the falsification or substitution of traces of the past.<br><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class='wp-block-ho-pattern ' data-pattern='ho\/text-magazin-interview-answer'>\n\n<div  class='container-fluid margin-bottom-7'>\n\n<div  class='row'>\n\n<div  class='col col-md-5 col-md-offset-7 col-xs-11 col-xs-offset-1'>\n\n<div  class='ho-tag is-primary is-small margin-bottom-3'>\t<p class='ho-tag-label'>Prudence Castelot and Adrien Chuttarsing (Filmatters)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>Throughout the process of reflection and creation during which we worked alongside Ania, the primary challenge was to find a point of convergence between her practice as a historian and filmmaker and our own practice of experimental research, which centers on films and the concept of latent space. We are, somehow, drawn to the way latent spaces challenge pre-established categories of classification and thought, upon which cultural data have been defined. It seems to us that latent cartographies can serve as spaces for renewing our perspective and knowledge through the exploration of material by disassembling and reassembling it, thereby producing a form of serendipity. <br><br>This way of thinking, which defies conventional categories and is multidisciplinary \u2013 horizontal, in short \u2013 can give rise to a form of poetry. Unexpected connections can create meaning; an overlooked image can surprise us with its beauty; and elements that, at first glance, appear to have nothing in common can become neighbors because there is an inner link between them that the machine can see, but which has escaped the human eye. For us, it is a cinematic fantasy being reimagined in a new form; yet, on the other hand, all this can quickly become problematic when applied to archives. The standardization of data into vectors, its decontextualization, the reuse of private archives for deep learning in generative systems, their opacity, the biases in the dataset and their false neutrality constitute an assault on History. We believe that the archive has become, more than ever, a political space where humans and machines meet. Using AI to index and analyze an archive dataset according to its statistical laws reveals things about the internal logic of the models. Producing images using generative AI informs us about the cultural and political biases of these systems. And maintaining this reflective approach whilst dealing with material, physical archives \u2013 drawn from non-digitized collections, managed in a \u2018traditional\u2019 and embodied manner \u2013 was perhaps one of the challenges of this work. How has it shaped your understanding of the relations between AI and archives, between the material traces that are preserved in traditional archives and their vectorial representations in latent spaces? And what do you think of the fact that AI offers the possibility of generating \u2018missing images\u2019 or modifying existing ones, by colorizing them, upscaling them, or setting still images in motion?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div  class='col col-md-5 col-md-offset-7 col-xs-11 col-xs-offset-1'>\n\n<div  class='ho-tag is-primary is-small margin-bottom-3'>\t<p class='ho-tag-label'>Ania Szczepa\u0144ska<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>Like many people, I think, I first realized that I was using AI tools without even being aware of it, as they are already incorporated, for example, into image retouching and conservation processes. Born in the 1980s, I belong to a generation that has experienced other technological revolutions, starting with the digital transition, which gradually transformed our relationship with archives, the preservation of traces of the past, their circulation and dissemination, whilst progressively altering the temporalities of research and accelerating access to sources. <br><br>This project allowed me to refine and add complexity to the connections I perceived between AI, history and memory. These new ways of navigating the collections were at times stimulating, as they enabled me to rethink the identity and uniqueness of an archive, as well as its interpretation in relation to related archives that I would not have spontaneously linked. Generative AI tools, for their part, forced me to confront what I would call a \u2018supreme temptation\u2019: that scopic impulse which consists of wanting to see or imagine the past that is no longer \u2013 something that has also been at the heart of the art of cinema since its inception \u2013 but also visual representations of the unfulfilled possibilities of history. The main benefit was gaining a better grasp of the logic behind these generative processes. It also involved understanding how these generated images alter archival images in almost imperceptible ways, as this substitution occurs through a shift that is sometimes invisible. As in the scene where the AI suggests transforming a female worker from a Frankfurt printing factory found in an original archive into a male worker, because statistically there were more male workers than female workers in factories of that era. This almost imperceptible shift in our consciousness \u2013 let\u2019s say a \u201csoft manipulation\u201d but with huge consequences in the long term \u2013 shocked me and made me want to explore it further. <br><br>But I found other creative uses of generative AI inspiring. I was also fascinated by the sound work carried out with sound engineer Plume Languille and the recreation of Brahms\u2019s score \u201cWarum ist das Licht gegeben dem M\u00fchseligen?\u201d (1877), sung by the 1933 choir and featuring samples of voices from today\u2019s choir. As we had a recording of this piece being sung by the choir at a previous commemoration, this allowed us to compare the version imagined by AI \u2013 using voice samples \u2013 with the \u2018human\u2019 interpretation of the score.
