Jede der Stationen wurde von einem zeitgen\u00f6ssischen K\u00fcnstler gestaltet. Mein Favorit sind die \u00fcberlebensgro\u00dfen Mosaike von Chuck Close, die in der fast komplett in Wei\u00df gehaltenen Station besonders hervor stechen. Der amerikanische K\u00fcnstler wurde in den sp\u00e4ten 60er Jahren durch seine hyperrealistischen, massiven Portraits, die er trotz Prosopagnosie (Gesichtsblindheit) aus unterschiedlichsten Materialien gestaltetet, bekannt. An der Oberfl\u00e4che angekommen, gehe ich entweder Richtung Westen zum Central Park oder Richtung Osten zum Carl Schurz Park und nehme mir von den Two Little Red Hens Proviant mit \u2013 hier gibt es die besten Cupcakes &amp; Die High Line, heute einer der beliebtesten Parks der Stadt, ist auf einer ehemaligen Hochtrasse f\u00fcr G\u00fcterz\u00fcge zwischen W34th und Gansevoort Street parallel zum Hudson River angelegt. Neben unz\u00e4hligen Pflanzen werden auf der Gr\u00fcnfl\u00e4che j\u00e4hrlich wechselnde <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehighline.org\/art\/\">Kunstprojekte<\/a> gezeigt. Dieses Jahr setzt sich die Gruppenausstellung AGORA mit der Frage auseinander, welche Rolle Kunst f\u00fcr die Definition, Gestaltung und Nutzung von \u00f6ffentlichem Raum innehat. Eine der neun K\u00fcstlerinnen und K\u00fcnstler ist Andrea Bowers, die zuletzt in der SCHIRN bei \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.schirn.de\/ausstellung\/power-to-the-people-2018\/\">Power to the People<\/a>\u201c zu sehen war. Obwohl die autofreie Insel nur knapp f\u00fcnf Minuten von der S\u00fcdspitze Manhattans entfernt ist, hat man trotzdem den Eindruck in einer komplett anderen Welt, ja fast in einer anderen Zeit zu sein. Die Mischung aus historischen Geb\u00e4uden und modern angelegtem Park bietet geistige Anregung als auch die M\u00f6glichkeit, einfach in einer der vielen H\u00e4ngematten, die \u00fcber den Park im s\u00fcdlichen Teil der Insel verteilt sind, zu entspannen. Diesen Sommer lohnt es sich aber noch f\u00fcr etwas Anderes auf die Insel zu kommen: Jacob Hashimoto\u2019s \u201eThe Eclipse\u201c. 15.000 schwarze und wei\u00dfe Kreise aus Reispapier h\u00e4ngen an kaum sichtbaren F\u00e4den von der Decke der zum ersten Mal seit 2013 wieder ge\u00f6ffneten St. Cornelius Chapel. Wer Lust hat, sich eine ihrer skurrilen Skulpturen anzuschauen, sollte die Gelegenheit nutzen und zur Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn fahren. Dort haben sie zwischen den riesigen Lagerhallen im Innenhof den \u201eChiaozza Zen Garden\u201c angelegt, eine lebensgro\u00dfe Version der in den 90er Jahren beliebten, japanischen Tischg\u00e4rten. Der kleine Park liegt zwischen dem architektonisch beeindruckenden Flatiron Building und Eataly, der italienische Feinkostriese hat eine der besten Eistheken der Stadt, die auf dem Weg dorthin oder im Anschluss ebenfalls einen Abstecher wert sind. Diesen Sommer zeigt hier die in Syrien geborene und in Brooklyn lebende K\u00fcnstlerin Diana Al-Hadid eigens f\u00fcr den Park entstandene Arbeiten unter dem Titel: \u201eDelirious Matter\u201c. Die wei\u00dfen Gips-Skulpturen scheinen die Oberfl\u00e4che von unsichtbaren Objekten, organische wie architektonische, zu umflie\u00dfen: Drei Frauenfiguren, kopflos, auf unsichtbaren Sockeln liegend, scheinen sich hinter der \u00fcppigen Vegetation des Parks zu verstecken. Seit Keith Haring sich hier 1982 mit seinem ikonischen \u201eCrack is Wack\u201c Bild f\u00fcr die Nachbarschaft verewigte, wurde die Wand von internationalen Streetart K\u00fcnstler*innen bespielt. Die Gegend um die Bowery bot Kreativen \u2013 K\u00fcnstler*innen wie Jean-Michel Basquiat, aber auch Musiker*innen und Schriftsteller*innen \u2013 seit den sp\u00e4ten 70ern ein zu Hause. Seit 2008 haben Tony Goldman (Goldman Properties ist seit 1984 offizieller Eigent\u00fcmer der Wand) und Jeffrey Deitch, Kunsth\u00e4ndler, ein gemeinsames kuratorisches Projekt ins Leben gerufen, das Street artists aus aller Welt eine Plattform bietet. Zuletzt war hier ein Bansky zu sehen. Er nutzte die Wand, um die Inhaftierung der t\u00fcrkischen K\u00fcnstlerin Zehra Do\u011fan kritisch zu kommentieren. Wo sich Troutman Street und Nicholas Avenue treffen, ist seit 2013 ein regelrechtes Wunderland an Street Art entstanden. Die sogenannte \u201e\u00f6ffentliche Galerie\u201c ist rein auf die Versch\u00f6nerung des Viertels ausgelegt: K\u00fcnstler*innen spenden ihre Materialien und Arbeit, Anwohner*innen stellen ihre Hausw\u00e4nde zur Verf\u00fcgung. F\u00fcr einen guten Kaffee setze ich mich in die K\u00e1v\u00e9 Espresso Bar, die etwas versteckt hinter einer knallgr\u00fcnen T\u00fcr an der Knickerbocker Avenue liegt. F\u00fcr den gro\u00dfen Hunger wiederum gibt es keinen besseren Ort als das Arepera Guacuco. Freedman Plaza sieht aus wie eine gigantische Flagge, die von einer Windb\u00f6e erfasst wird. Die Farben \u2013 knalliges Orange, T\u00fcrkis und erdiges Braun \u2013 sollen an westafrikanische Stoffe erinnern. Shonibare, geboren in London und aufgewachsen in Lagos, hat sein gesamtes Leben zwischen England und Nigeria verbracht. Er versteht sich selbst als Kulturhybrid, \u201eein Produkt aus komplexen, \u00fcbereinander gelagerten Beziehungen, die \u00fcber Jahrhunderte von globalem Handel, Migration, Politik und Kulturaustausch geformt wurden.\u201c<br><br>Von hier aus gehe ich entweder in den Park, schlendere die Mall runter in Richtung Bethesda Terrace oder, wenn mir nach h\u00fcbscher Architektur und einem St\u00fcck Kuchen ist, kreuze ich einmal die Grand Army Plaza und laufe zum Plaza Hotel. Am besten kommt man gegen 22:30 Uhr auf ein Slice Pizza und geht dann zu Dave &amp; Busters, eine original amerikanische Arcade (Spielhalle). Um 23:45 Uhr sollte man sich aber von den Automaten losrei\u00dfen, damit man das Wichtigste nicht verpasst: den Midnight Moment. Jede Nacht um exakt 23:57 Uhr wird ein gro\u00dfer Teil der bunten Screens f\u00fcr drei Minuten auf ein monatlich wechselndes Kunstprojekt umgestellt. Dann stehe ich gerne in der Mitte, lasse Bilder, Menschen und all die durcheinander wirbelnden Eindr\u00fccke auf mich einprasseln. Und wenn man dann, leicht angetrunken von all den Lichtern, \u00fcber die Gitterroste an der Fu\u00dfg\u00e4ngerinsel zwischen 45th und 46th Street am Broadway entlang stolpert, kann man das tiefe Wummern von Max Neuhaus\u2019 Soundinstallation \u201eTimes Square\u201c h\u00f6ren.
