Portikus, built in 1987 to plans by Marie-Theres Deutsch. The Frank\u00adfurt-based archi\u00adtect found out about this by pure chance through an artist friend, but it imme\u00addi\u00adately brought memo\u00adries flooding back. On the occa\u00adsion of the 100th anniver\u00adsary of the birth of US artist Ellsworth Kelly, his famous piece \u201cYellow Curve\u201d went on display at the museum in Paris, which chose to show it within a recon\u00adstruc\u00adtion of the inte\u00adrior where he had exhib\u00adited the work in 1990 in Frank\u00adfurt, and this recon\u00adstruc\u00adtion was faithful to the orig\u00adinal down to the very last millimeter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class='wp-block-ho-pattern toggle-optional-headline toggle-optional-button' data-pattern='ho\/text-option-headline-button'>\n\n<div  class='margin-bottom-7'>\n\n<div  class='container-fluid cf-gutter-5 cf-side-5'>\n\n<div  class='row ho-pattern-optional-headline'>\n\n<div  class='col col-md-6 col-xs-12'>\n\n<div  class='padding-bottom-4'>\n<h2 class='ho-sd-h3' style=\"white-space: normal;\">Lorem ipsum<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div  class='row'>\n\n<div  class='col col-md-6 col-xs-12'>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ho-div\">\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>Marie-Theres Deutsch was born in 1955 in Trier at the central western tip of Germany, into a family of five women and a father who was an archi\u00adtect. At the age of six, she knew: \u201cI\u2019m going to be an archi\u00adtect. Period.\u201d And because in German the word \u201carchi\u00adtect\u201d was mascu\u00adline, she of course used the descriptor for her own profes\u00adsion. After studying at a univer\u00adsity of applied sciences, she progressed to the St\u00e4delschule in order to learn archi\u00adtec\u00adture from a very different perspec\u00adtive. Fast forward a little, and Deutsch had already designed the orig\u00adinal Portikus, the St\u00e4delschule\u2019s first exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion space. This was followed by projects throughout the city and beyond, such as the St\u00e4delschule guest apart\u00adment, the revi\u00adtal\u00adiza\u00adtion of the Main river\u00adside and of the building where she lived and worked. About 80 percent of her work involves modern\u00adizing existing struc\u00adtures. This requires a lot of craft skills, she says, and the designs are often defined by the costs. She attempts wher\u00adever possible to use existing resources. \u201cA project in Westend converted an old coal cellar into a marvelous bistro. It required quite a lot of effort, but the loca\u00adtion justi\u00adfies that. Imagine the following situ\u00ada\u00adtion: Four daugh\u00adters fight it out for their father\u2019s atten\u00adtion. I built Lego houses and drew ground plans, and that guar\u00adan\u00adteed me my dad for myself some\u00adtimes even for an hour. He was an archi\u00adtect and thus I grad\u00adu\u00adally became immersed in the subject. At the age of six, I knew: I\u2019m going to be an archi\u00adtect! Period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class='wp-block-ho-pattern ' data-pattern='ho\/text-magazin-interview'>\n\n<div  class='container-fluid margin-bottom-7'>\n\n<div  class='row'>\n\n<div  class='col col-xs-12 col-md-6 col-md-offset-6 padding-bottom-5'>\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>After univer\u00adsity you started studying archi\u00adtec\u00adture at the St\u00e4delschule, too. Did that comple\u00adment your first degree or was it completely different?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div  class='col col-md-5 col-md-offset-7 col-xs-11 col-xs-offset-1'>\n\n<div  class='ho-tag is-primary is-small margin-bottom-3'>\t<p class='ho-tag-label'>Marie-Theres DEutsch<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>It was clear to me from the outset that I would complete my first, tech\u00adnical degree very quickly. At the acad\u00ade\u00admies it was a precon\u00addi\u00adtion for being accepted. I found myself in a completely different world and stayed on in Frank\u00adfurt. There were wonderful people at the St\u00e4delschule, and initially the curriculum was very inter\u00addis\u00adci\u00adpli\u00adnary. G\u00fcnter Bock and Peter Cook headed the archi\u00adtec\u00adture class, Peter Kubelka \u201cexper\u00adi\u00admental film\u201d and \u201ccooking as art\u201d, and Hermann Nitsch was guest professor. The entire situ\u00ada\u00adtion simply capti\u00advated me.  <br><br>In the 1970s, at the Frank\u00adfurt Univer\u00adsity of Applied Sciences you primarily learned the tech\u00adnical know-how, from which I was of course able to derive bene\u00adfits. For a young person, however, it some\u00adwhat blurred your judge\u00adment as a lot centered around the ques\u00adtion of \u201cHow can I use this specific mate\u00adrial?\u201d In archi\u00adtec\u00adture, though, the purpose is to find the roots of the place, to tease out what the history is and to \u201cplay\u201d with that knowl\u00adedge. What is immensely impor\u00adtant is not just to copy the styl\u00adistic means of the past but to estab\u00adlish what is special about the place and to trans\u00adform that into today\u2019s world. So don\u2019t ask me about Frank\u00adfurt\u2019s New Old Town (laughs). That\u2019s an example where you can see how great the differ\u00adence can be between urban plan\u00adning and archi\u00adtec\u00adtural quality. I feel the modi\u00adfied histor\u00adical urban foot\u00adprint is persua\u00adsive, and the high visitor figures demon\u00adstrate that the place is an attrac\u00adtion. But the indi\u00advidual build\u00adings are bad copies of their prede\u00adces\u00adsors, and only two of the build\u00adings have in my opinion achieved the requi\u00adsite trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion. <br><br>At the art academy, I learned from teachers such as G\u00fcnter Bock and Peter Cook to construe archi\u00adtec\u00adture as a response in the here and now. We\u2019re inten\u00adsively trained to do that. It was erected in 1987 on the site where today\u2019s Liter\u00adaturhaus stands. A \u201cflying\u201d building that was orig\u00adi\u00adnally granted building approval for only two years, but the permit was forever being extended. It even\u00adtu\u00adally made it to 17. You were very young at the time, at the very begin\u00adning of your career. So how did it all happen?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div  class='col col-md-5 col-md-offset-7 col-xs-11 col-xs-offset-1'>\n\n<div  class='ho-tag is-primary is-small margin-bottom-3'>\t<p class='ho-tag-label'>Marie-Theres DEutsch<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>Kasper K\u00f6nig\u2019s atti\u00adtude played a key role. He thought outside the main\u00adstream box. We had heard from Thomas Bayrle that Kasper was inter\u00adested in signing on in Frank\u00adfurt. But under the condi\u00adtion that he could exhibit at a place of his choice. So where could that be? Back then, the three of us drove over the bridge crossing the Main, where today\u2019s Liter\u00adaturhaus is located \u2013 Manfred Stumpf, Thomas Bayrle, and I. An artist was just shooting a film scene there. A huge halogen spot\u00adlight was shining on the then ruins, and one of us exclaimed: \u201cThat\u2019s it!\u201d That moment enabled us to expe\u00adri\u00adence the place in a new way. <br><br>Thomas told Kasper about our idea \u2013 and that it was tough. The ruins were a monu\u00adment to the soldiers killed in World War II and stood abut\u00adting the inner-city ring road featuring park\u00adland rather than the razed city ramparts. To this day, the law states that no building may be erected on that ground. Kasper imme\u00addi\u00adately cham\u00adpi\u00adoned the idea. A marvelous place, really close to down\u00adtown and yet off-center. Home\u00adless people frequently used the area. Kasper and Thomas met in Frank\u00adfurt for a meal, and by pure chance I wandered into the same restau\u00adrant that day. Thomas spotted me and called out, \u201cThere she is! Here, Kasper, your archi\u00adtect!\u201d That was how we teamed up. Those two moments were deci\u00adsive. The idea thus evolved that was in no way related to the later name of the place: Portikus. The line of river\u00adside museums had just been completed, places with a high entrance threshold. Kasper wanted exactly the oppo\u00adsite: an uncom\u00adpli\u00adcated, vibrant place that would exclude the estab\u00adlish\u00adment\u2019s self-conceit.  <br><br>A few years later, adopting precisely that mindset, I devel\u00adoped many small places along the river\u00adside down\u00adtown. To this day, the idea is successful, as the Main river\u00adside is highly popular with all its small bars. It\u2019s not just locals who love those easily acces\u00adsible relaxed spaces directly on the water\u00adside.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class='wp-block-ho-pattern ' data-pattern='ho\/text-magazin-interview'>\n\n<div  class='container-fluid margin-bottom-7'>\n\n<div  class='row'>\n\n<div  class='col col-xs-12 col-md-6 col-md-offset-6 padding-bottom-5'>\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>How was your under\u00adtaking viewed outside the art bubble?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div  class='col col-md-5 col-md-offset-7 col-xs-11 col-xs-offset-1'>\n\n<div  class='ho-tag is-primary is-small margin-bottom-3'>\t<p class='ho-tag-label'>Marie-Theres DEutsch<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>My plans for the Portikus were contro\u00adver\u00adsial even among those at the St\u00e4delschule. My former teachers accused me of showing a lack of respect. \u201c\u2026She simply slaps the art box down directly next to the ruined wall \u2026,\u201d as some put it. \u201c\u2026But it\u2019s a monu\u00adment to the soldiers who were killed!\u201d, they said. I was slammed for being \u201ccheeky\u201d. The Munic\u00adipal Dept. of Building insisted that \u201cshe\u2019s much too young and inex\u00adpe\u00adri\u00adenced, it can\u2019t work out. We\u2019ll do it ourselves!\u201d I got really mad. What followed was a really intense working weekend with colleagues and fellow students in the knowl\u00adedge that \u201cwe\u2019ve got a weekend only and will plan the design on a scale of 1:50 including all the details \u2026.\u201d No sooner said than done. Early Monday saw me standing with the filled tube of plans at the entrance to the Munic\u00adipal Building Dept. waiting to inter\u00adcept the guys. I was conde\u00adscend\u00adingly taken along to the meeting. There I presented our care\u00adfully planned proposal. I was fortu\u00adnate enough to combine commit\u00adment with audacity, and my tech\u00adnical knowl\u00adedge from my days at the Univer\u00adsity of Applied Sciences once again proved a strength.<br><br>Hilmar Hoff\u00admann as City Deputy Mayor in charge of Culture and Hans-Erhard Haverkampf as City Building Exec\u00adu\u00adtive supported the project. It was clear that the City of Frank\u00adfurt really wanted to attract Kasper K\u00f6nig, and the construc\u00adtion manager at the munic\u00adipal FAG corpo\u00adra\u00adtion, which handled site manage\u00adment, liked me. My father died young, and I thus grew up in a house with five other women in the arch-Catholic, bigoted conser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive world of Trier. The home and the office were often only sepa\u00adrated by a door. On average, there were ten staff members in the office, and one of them always cooked for the team in the apart\u00adment. Or played with my daughter. After a few years, that frequently became too much for me. Compe\u00adti\u00adtions are part of that. We were invited to take part in a compe\u00adti\u00adtion to design a mobile opera pavilion for 70 musi\u00adcians in front of Alte Oper. We won the compe\u00adti\u00adtion in the second round and were commis\u00adsioned to handle the imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion plan\u00adning together with the engi\u00adneering office Bollinger+Grohmann \u2013 it was a bril\u00adliant design. ARCH+ maga\u00adzine published the project, and there was a great response. One week before construc\u00adtion was sched\u00aduled to begin, the project was suddenly termi\u00adnated. I received a call from a secre\u00adtary in the Munic\u00adipal Building Dept. who informed us we should down all tools with imme\u00addiate effect. That was rough. We\u2019d worked on it inten\u00adsively for two whole years and fell into a deep, dark hole. To this day, I don\u2019t know the reason why the project was discon\u00adtinued. <br><br>The idea for a water-taxi line also did not get real\u00adized. To coin\u00adcide with the FIFA World Cup 2006, the plan was for six water taxis with designs corre\u00adsponding to the skyline to ply their trade between West\u00adhafen and Osthafen. Friedrich von Metzler, who sadly died a few days ago, really helped me back then to find spon\u00adsors for the taxis among river\u00adside resi\u00addents. Each sponsor would have been respon\u00adsible for one water taxi and would have had to finance its oper\u00ada\u00adtions for the first three years. The Nauheimer family was brought on board as oper\u00adator of the taxi line, and the FPS law office supported us, drawing up the contracts on a pro bono basis.  <br><br>The very well adver\u00adtised multi\u00admedia SkyArena light show during the World Cup succes\u00adsively promoted the spon\u00adsors who had already signed up with immense promises. I had myself financed the Main\u00adlust water taxi, and more than two years of presen\u00adta\u00adtions given for free along with meet\u00adings and plan\u00adning adjust\u00adments took me to the brink of finan\u00adcial disaster. Petra Roth, at the time Lord Mayor of Frank\u00adfurt, promised to support us with every\u00adthing other than financing. After being informed of that, I announced the end of the project in the Frank\u00adfurter Allge\u00admeine. In conver\u00adsa\u00adtion, people to this day still ask me about the project. We had a brief culture bubble with Kasper K\u00f6nig, when galleries received grants to attract the gallery and art world into the city. It was a brief heyday lasting perhaps 15 years. Patrons such as Sylvia and Friedrich von Metzler really need mentioning in this context as they supported the uncon\u00adven\u00adtional ideas, too. You need outstanding indi\u00advid\u00aduals to drive cultural ideas if you are to ensure that exciting projects such as, right now, the Frank\u00adfurt Proto\u00adtype (editors\u2019 note: which went on display in October 2024 for three months at the Senck\u00aden\u00adberg Museum) do not disap\u00adpear back into the ether after only a few months. Back then, as regards the Portikus, people kept on saying to me: \u201cThat tin can isn\u2019t archi\u00adtec\u00adture!\u201d The city exec\u00adu\u00adtive in charge of the Munic\u00adipal Plan\u00adning Dept. at the time simply ignored me because I was a young woman. We performed this service for art in the form of the Portikus. In Alt-Sach\u00adsen\u00adhausen, I have been involved in a project for several years now that was delayed owing to the pandemic and the subse\u00adquent phase of high interest rates. At present, I wait with bated breath to see how the munic\u00adipal author\u00adi\u00adties respond. There were times when you took a lawyer with you when visiting a munic\u00adipal depart\u00adment; that did not improve the mood.
