This is the third episode of an English-language podcast from the SCHIRN debuting along\u00adside its exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion, \u201cMagnetic North: Imag\u00adining Canada in Painting 1910-1940.\u201d In this podcast series, we\u2019re drawing from some of the themes in \u201cMagnetic North\u201d to go beyond what is displayed on the gallery walls through conver\u00adsa\u00adtions with Indige\u00adnous artists and scholars.\u00a0In today\u2019s episode, you\u2019ll hear from an Indige\u00adnous leader about land as she knows it.\u00a0<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> [Intro\u00adducing herself] My name is Jocelyn Joe-Strack, and I live in White\u00adhorse, Yukon, and I\u2019m a member of the Cham\u00adpagne and Aishihik First Nation from north\u00adwestern Yukon.<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> In 2019, Jocelyn Joe-Strack came to Germany as one stop on her Euro\u00adpean speaking tour of Cana\u00addian embassies. She was invited to share her perspec\u00adtive on climate change as an Indige\u00adnous scien\u00adtist. In today\u2019s conver\u00adsa\u00adtion on \u201cCritical land\u201d, Joe-Strack takes us through her expe\u00adri\u00adence in acad\u00ademia, from what initially compelled her to become a scien\u00adtist to why today she calls herself a \u201cscien\u00adtist in recovery.\u201d You\u2019ll hear what\u2019s shaped her as a leader and what she says is missing from conver\u00adsa\u00adtions about climate change. As a member of the Cham\u00adpagne and Aishihik First Nation, Joe-Strack belongs to one of the few self-governing First Nations of Canada. She explains why that\u2019s signif\u00adi\u00adcant to her and her people.<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> We\u2019re very proud, I\u2019m proud to say that I come from a family of leaders. In 1973, they went to Ottawa, including my dad, and presented their vision for <a href=\"https:\/\/cyfn.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/together_today_for_our_children_tomorrow.pdf\">\u201cTogether Today for our Chil\u00addren Tomorrow\u201d<\/a>\u00a0for Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and we still cele\u00adbrate that. It happens on Valen\u00adtine\u2019s Day, where Valen\u00adtine\u2019s Day is also just this moment of deep pride for all of the fight that the leaders before us put forward. So I\u2019m a \u201cdaughter of tomorrow\u201d and a daughter of the land claims, and so the gener\u00ada\u00adtion today, the work\u2019s not done. There\u2019s still so much to do, but we\u2019ve been trained to do it and to be so committed to create a better tomorrow for our chil\u00addren to come and all of that is surrounded by our self-govern\u00adment and our deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion to be able to evolve the society that we live in to better serve gener\u00ada\u00adtions to come.<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> You mentioned your father, Willie Joe, was also a leader. Is there some\u00adthing that you learned from his style of lead\u00ader\u00adship or perhaps have looked to as you go forward as a leader in your own commu\u00adnity?\u00a0<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> Aw that\u2019s a nice ques\u00adtion. Yeah my dad was a visionary. He had really big ideas and I would like to believe that some of my big ideas come from him as well. He was very charis\u00admatic \u2013 people just really, really liked him, he was quite charming, and he passed when I was 13, but when I was 10 is when our final agree\u00adments were final\u00adized, and it took 20 years to nego\u00adtiate them, and my dad was a part of it almost the whole way through, at different capac\u00adi\u00adties. But when I was 10, I remember I was like doing laundry or some\u00adthing in my room and he burst into my room and handed me this like tattered up pile of paper, and he was like \u201cThis is for you!\u201d and he was just so excited, I just still really remember his excite\u00adment and pride and then I think he ran back out and he went to go cele\u00adbrate. But that was really impacting for me and I think he must have spoken to me quite early about the deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion for us to lead, and he always told me like \u201cBe a leader, be a leader\u201d and I was always like \u201cBe popular in high school!\u201d And I didn\u2019t know what he meant. And so it was just really rewarding for him to believe in me so much and just really transmit that devo\u00adtion to me, that I now carry and have my for own chil\u00addren and for all of the Yukon chil\u00addren.<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> And that tattered piece of paper, that was the agree\u00adment then?<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> It was, yes. And I still have it. I still have his copy of the final agree\u00adment that he gave to me so, yeah it was really special.<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> You are a trained scien\u00adtist \u2013 you\u2019re a micro\u00adbi\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgist and a hydrol\u00ado\u00adgist. Can you describe what that exactly means and what your research has entailed?<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> Yeah, I\u2019ve jour\u00adneyed through a lot of different knowl\u00adedges in my youth and younger days. Throughout my 20s I guess I really focused a lot on sciences. My under\u00adgrad\u00aduate is in biochem\u00adistry and micro\u00adbi\u00adology. I suppose a lot of my story is about my dad. So my dad sadly passed of cancer because during World War II, the army came through and built a highway right by our tradi\u00adtional villages and they relo\u00adcated all of the people from the traplines into the commu\u00adnity of Cham\u00adpagne and they had a dump there. They dumped all of their vehi\u00adcles, they dumped all of their oil, and sadly many of the people that grew up in Cham\u00adpagne ended up passing from very strange cancers, including my dad. So when I grad\u00adu\u00adated at 17, so I\u2019d lost my dad for four years by then, I was really committed to learning more about cancer, and that\u2019s why I went and did biochem\u00adistry, and I did. I\u2019m proud to say I did do cancer research, I spent some time researching stem cells and breast cancer malig\u00adnancy, but the work wasn\u2019t for me, it\u2019s very tedious and repet\u00adi\u00adtive. I started to realize that I wanted to come home to the Yukon and that\u2019s why I kind of started empha\u00adsizing micro\u00adbi\u00adology and geog\u00adraphy and hydrology, so I took as a job as a new univer\u00adsity grad\u00aduate as a hydrol\u00ado\u00adgist, hydrology tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgist with the Yukon.And then I moved into doing a masters in micro\u00adbi\u00adology and geog\u00adraphy so I knew that I wanted to know more about my country, my land of our people. So I looked at Kusawa Lake which has a deep history and I looked at the cycle of mercury in the sedi\u00adments there and the role of bacteria in methy\u00adlating or making the mercury toxic. But I ran into a road\u00adblock there, where as an acad\u00ademic and as a scien\u00adtist, I was not allowed to express my love and belonging to Kusawa Lake in my research and my writing and that was really hurtful and harmful to me, because I didn\u2019t feel that I was really telling the story. They only wanted me to tell a story of the science, but it was such a narrow window, and even in my micro\u00adbi\u00adology I tried to be so compre\u00adhen\u00adsive and just tell as much of the story as I could, and they really wanted me to just focus on very small, little, specific pieces of it to the point where my thesis is a docu\u00adment that sits on a shelf. I felt that it was mean\u00ading\u00adless in the end and overall, that five years of work, other than the lessons and the insights that I took out of it, the research itself hasn\u2019t contributed very much.\u00a0\u00a0And so I came back into the Yukon and I started doing consulting for my people, and I started connecting more with my role as a leader, and I real\u00adized how science was not allowing me to be the leader that I needed to be and that really the most impor\u00adtant thing I could concen\u00adtrate on was people and their rela\u00adtion\u00adships. And so I\u2019m grateful and honored to be known as a scien\u00adtist but now I call myself a \u201cscien\u00adtist in recovery\u201d because I just felt like I couldn\u2019t be true to me within science. I was only known for the knowl\u00adedge, the objec\u00adtive obser\u00adva\u00adtions that I put out, and not what they meant to my heart, and not how I could connect them to the lives of the people here, with the land, and the chil\u00addren.<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> With all of that in mind when you went forward pursuing your Ph.D., were you able to get to a place with your research where it wasn\u2019t just about collecting data, it was about more than that. Is there some\u00adthing you were able to do that was missing before?\u00a0<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> I am sad to say, no! So I did go into a Ph.D. program and I\u2019m no longer doing it, partially because of what you just shared. As a consul\u00adtant, I was devel\u00adoping a land claim for my commu\u00adnity \u2013 all of our tradi\u00adtional terri\u00adtory. And so concur\u00adrently I thought that was a great oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to write a Ph.D., but I got hung up during the compre\u00adhen\u00adsives because they asked a ques\u00adtion about land claims, but they wanted me to pair it with liter\u00ada\u00adture but unfor\u00adtu\u00adnately the liter\u00ada\u00adture was so sorely under\u00adde\u00advel\u00adoped, and from a perspec\u00adtive derived out of southern-based acad\u00ade\u00admics taking an eagle eye view, observing down and making state\u00adments about our rela\u00adtion\u00adships and our deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion and our devo\u00adtion to chil\u00addren. And they were writing just about the land and resources and it was just a total clash of world\u00adview. So they asked me to rewrite a paper because I couldn\u2019t pair the liter\u00ada\u00adture because it conflicted with my iden\u00adtity as a daughter of the land claims. And they just didn\u2019t like that and so we kind of reached an impasse, and I chose to leave the program when I was offered a posi\u00adtion with Yukon Univer\u00adsity as a research chair. And Yukon Univer\u00adsity selected me for that posi\u00adtion without a Ph.D. because they honored my knowl\u00adedge and my devo\u00adtion to the Yukon and recog\u00adnized that a Ph.D. would not enable me or prevent me from doing the work in a good way.<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> Do you feel now, in your role at Yukon Univer\u00adsity, that you\u2019ve been able to intro\u00adduce what you\u2019ve iden\u00adti\u00adfied as missing? So that it\u2019s not just about the data or measuring what\u2019s in a lake and then not being able to pair it with any other type of knowl\u00adedge \u2013 because that doesn\u2019t speak to what you can bring to the table as a person. So are you trying to change that in your role, and how can you do that?\u00a0<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> I\u2019m grateful to say that I am. Yukon Univer\u00adsity like any insti\u00adtu\u00adtion these days, has a road in front of it in terms of decol\u00ado\u00adnizing and creating this type of space. It requires taking risk and oper\u00adating in a degree of uncer\u00adtainty. Now many of our poli\u00adcies and processes are in place to provide certainty but they also keep us in place. They prevent us from moving forward. They are a box of certainty that prevents inno\u00adva\u00adtion! And it\u2019s sort of a funny thing within acad\u00ademia that they are sort of hall\u00admarked as places of inno\u00adva\u00adtion yet they are actu\u00adally quite strin\u00adgent in preventing inno\u00adva\u00adtion because of this need of it because of this need of certainty \u2013 fiscal certainty, finan\u00adcial certainty, ethical certainty. And I think there are a lot of acad\u00ade\u00admics that are searching and working very hard to over\u00adcome those chal\u00adlenges and to acknowl\u00adedge the boxes and limi\u00adta\u00adtions, and it just takes lead\u00ader\u00adship, and being from a family of leaders I under\u00adstand what that means and a big part of being a leader is having the gall to say no! And to call out some of these processes as oppres\u00adsive or as preventing us from moving forward, keeping us stuck where we are. And all of these systems extend beyond acad\u00ademia, they persist within our govern\u00adments and within the way we make deci\u00adsions. And I believe it\u2019s why we are in the conun\u00addrum of climate change.<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> And that\u2019s a great segue. How did you first become engaged with tack\u00adling climate change?\u00a0<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> As being a scien\u00adtist I suppose is where it started, certainly working as a hydrol\u00ado\u00adgist I become very aware of changes to our water\u00adways. But it was when I was writing actu\u00adally the land plan for my First Nation, that was a wonderful exer\u00adcise because I worked so closely with my family, my people \u2013 there\u2019s 1,200 people within my First Nation. And I started to come to under\u00adstand the story of yesterday, to today, and then what it is we need to do for tomorrow. And a big piece that\u2019s missing from a lot of the work that we do is yesterday. We often spend so much time focused on today and what we\u2019re doing, and the models and the systems and the obser\u00adva\u00adtions of today to make deci\u00adsions about how we move forward tomorrow, but to be honest honoring our story and our journey is a very impor\u00adtant piece of coming to under\u00adstand how we sit where we are today. And for me as a First Nations person from the Yukon, our story has a sad compo\u00adnent to it in terms of when people came. I\u2019m fortu\u00adnate though that where we are our people came quite late in the scale of time, so I knew people that saw the first white people come to the Yukon, and the first people really started coming to the Yukon in the late 1800s. And then we had a big gold rush here in 1898, where there was a massive influx of gold seekers from across Canada and western United States.Then in the 1940s as I spoke of before, that was the true change when they put through the Alaska Highway and the army settled in and they removed people from their traplines and they brought them into the settle\u00adments, and this is when the chil\u00addren first started going to school.\u00a0And thinking about all of these elements of the evolu\u00adtion of our society and how we\u2019ve come to this place of inequity \u2013 caught in these systems where we\u2019re kept in place. These are the drivers of climate change, and they evolved like World War II was a signif\u00adi\u00adcant event, it\u2019s really where we trans\u00adferred into the time of capi\u00adtalism and really started focusing on the mate\u00adrial economy, and so now we\u2019ve come to this place where we\u2019re completely depen\u00addent on these systems. Where we need these things that we surrounded ourselves with \u2013 where we buy our food. Where I live often the food comes from very far away, pack\u00adaged in plastic. We seem to be left with no choice. In order to live, we need money. In order to get money, we need to work 9 to 5. With that money we purchase the things that serve our lives.\u00a0But then yesterday, my ances\u00adtors and many of the ances\u00adtors in Europe and other places in the world had a much higher degree of autonomy and capacity and capa\u00adbility to care for their own. And it was driven out of one\u2019s indi\u00advidual skill, but also one\u2019s belonging and depen\u00addence on imme\u00addiate commu\u00adnity and family and that was very true where we are here in the Yukon. So every indi\u00advidual person was capable of surviving for a short amount of time within the depths of minus 40 winter in the Yukon where there\u2019s very little food, but they were also very depen\u00addent on their fami\u00adlies and they had whole social struc\u00adtures and rules of gover\u00adnance, and rela\u00adtion\u00adship with the land that really prior\u00adi\u00adtized the need of the land to be healthy.And in the winter, there was not much around and there were stories of star\u00adva\u00adtion and so they cached food all summer long in the bounty of summer and then they want back to it during the winter and they harvested food from under ice, and they had moose and caribou. And they survived this way, and it was a really beau\u00adtiful cycle that was depen\u00addent on the seasons, depended one\u2019s role within the family, and they all knew what they needed to do. That\u2019s another thing. They had confi\u00addence and emotional aware\u00adness. They didn\u2019t get unrea\u00adson\u00adably angry. Their anger was also very purposeful. They just were really trained to be these whole, very self-aware, confi\u00addent and compe\u00adtent people.\u00a0<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> When you say that not looking at yesterday, not looking at the past is maybe this thing that is missing from the discus\u00adsion we\u2019re having about climate change today, is the solu\u00adtion trying to go back to some of the prac\u00adtices that used to be? Or is it more abstract, it\u2019s more about the confi\u00addence that you mentioned, it\u2019s more this manner of behavior rather than an actual literal prac\u00adtice or this kind of, \u201chere\u2019s a guide of what to do\u201d?\u00a0<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> I believe that, yes, that\u2019s very well put. In looking back, it helps us to under\u00adstand who we are today, and there are things we can take from our ances\u00adtors and prac\u00adtices and lessons but at the very root of it all I do believe it is the values of our society that need to change. And if we are to shift values, we need to undergo a process of truth and recon\u00adcil\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtion which is a First Nations, Indige\u00adnous prac\u00adtice I guess that is under\u00adgoing in coun\u00adtries that have a colo\u00adnial history, so like Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, and the States, and we have different degrees of truth and recon\u00adcil\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtion, and its success. But it\u2019s truth, right? It\u2019s speaking truth to where we\u2019ve come and in many soci\u00adeties, I know there\u2019s a common\u00adality in sort of covering up the truth, or not acknowl\u00adedging it or being silent about the happening. And that used to happen here.So with resi\u00adden\u00adtial school, when I grew up, I didn\u2019t really know what it was. I knew it was bad, but my family wouldn\u2019t speak about it because it was part of our culture, that happened, it\u2019s done with, and we don\u2019t talk about it anymore. And I know that that happens in other coun\u00adtries, like Spain. When I was in Spain, I did come to under\u00adstand that \u2013 there\u2019s a history and a need for recon\u00adcil\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtion there.And then it was inter\u00adesting also when I went to Germany, and I was very proud of Germany and Berlin for the work that they\u2019ve put into recon\u00adcil\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtion and the time of the war. I do believe the war \u2013 world\u00adwide \u2013 I think we need to go back to there, to really acknowl\u00adedge how much that war hurt our planet. It did, it did. And we\u2019ve been all proud of the success of our devel\u00adop\u00adment since the war and the comfort that we live in and the safety and secu\u00adrity as indi\u00advidual devel\u00adoped coun\u00adtries, but we\u2019re leaving others behind. There\u2019s a great degree of inequity in all devel\u00adoped coun\u00adtries.And the other piece too \u2013 the most impor\u00adtant piece \u2013 is that many indi\u00advid\u00aduals within these devel\u00adoped coun\u00adtries do not live in a state of content\u00adment and peace. We\u2019re fraz\u00adzled, we\u2019re anxious. Anxiety is rampant across the globe, and we are discon\u00adnected from land and from each other because of our indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adal\u00adistic values. But really I think as people \u2013 as soci\u00adetal, connected, commu\u00adnity human beings \u2013 we need depen\u00addence on each other, not these systems, abstract systems. We need depen\u00addence on each other in order to have wonderful lives.<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> You mentioned Spain and Germany, which were two of the places you visited in 2019 when you were invited by the Cana\u00addian Embassies to come to Europe and share your under\u00adstanding of climate change as an Indige\u00adnous scien\u00adtist. What has stayed with you from that visit?<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> And it was a wonderful visit! So I came over with my husband and my two chil\u00addren. I think my baby was still a baby, she would have been just under a year. And my daughter would have been 3. So we went to Spain, Sweden, Germany and France. And it was really wonderful, I was so honored to be able to share some of this wisdom and much of what I\u2019m talking about here, although I believe my message has evolved a little bit.But the message that I brought was about connec\u00adtion to land and the ability to have a better life and not neces\u00adsarily a happy life, but a content, content and peaceful sort of life, where you\u2019re more accepted to the cycles and the happen\u00adings of your journey. So I spoke about some of the ways that we could shift the values, and these are First Nations values that were prized within our society and prac\u00adticed on a very regular basis. So the first and most impor\u00adtant being grat\u00adi\u00adtude, like thank\u00adful\u00adness. Every morning I wake up and face the east and [say thank you for the new day]. And since I\u2019ve started doing that, my life has been a little nicer, I must admit. And some\u00adtimes when I\u2019m too tired to go outside and do it, I believe that my day is not as nice as the days where I do it.Being grateful is the oppo\u00adsite of being enti\u00adtled, and we are very much a society that can feel enti\u00adtled through notions of owner\u00adship.\u00a0Owner\u00adship is not some\u00adthing that persisted within our First Nations commu\u00adnity. There was stew\u00adard\u00adship, there was no land owner\u00adship. You cared. There were places where a family cared for and had authority over because it was under their care, but there were no hard borders. And the only things that you could own were things that you made or food that you harvested, but all of the food was shared grate\u00adfully. And so this enti\u00adtle\u00adment is some\u00adthing I doesn\u2019t neces\u00adsarily serve us within modern society.<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> I want to bring our discus\u00adsion to the art exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion happening at the SCHIRN, where the Group of Seven\u2019s work is on display in Germany for the first time. And I wanted to first ask you about your first encounter with the Group of Seven and how their work struck you?<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> Artwork is such a wonderful way to connect us and to provide a bit of peace and ques\u00adtion and inqui\u00adsi\u00adtion, and it also holds a bit of a spirit of the artist or of the feature of the art that is really wonderful to connect with. And as we think about trying to be whole people, art is a very impor\u00adtance piece of that creativity and fulfill\u00adment. So yeah, I think Group of Seven has done a wonderful job of tran\u00adscending that, bringing the spirit and the life of the land into our homes, or you know into our museums for us all to share.<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> One of the themes the \u201cMagnetic North\u201d exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion at the SCHIRN explores is the differ\u00adence between land and land\u00adscape. How do you see the differ\u00adence between those two?\u00a0<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> Land and land\u00adscape. I suppose land\u00adscape is some\u00adthing that you are to look at or observe. Whereas land is some\u00adthing that you can have a rela\u00adtion\u00adship with and be a part of. So we have a motto here called part of the land, part of the water. And even in my role as a scien\u00adtist, I find that people always want me to do work on like, \u201cenvi\u00adron\u00admental moni\u00adtoring\u201d or \u201cland manage\u00adment,\u201d and so when I come in talking about like, chil\u00addren and commu\u00adnity and inequity, they struggle to see the connec\u00adtion. But to me healthy people means healthy land. And so all of my energy in terms of climate change is focused on these deep values of people, and that could be part of my micro\u00adbi\u00adology too, like just going to the foun\u00adda\u00adtion of what the problem is and the problem is that we are stuck in a system that promotes values that in turn harm Earth, and harm each other. So I\u2019m just trying to create a little bit more peace, content\u00adment, share some more smiles so the chil\u00addren tomorrow can have a better future.\u00a0<br><br><strong>Sylvia Cunningham:<\/strong> And that\u2019s my last ques\u00adtion because I know that when your dad was fighting for your future, you were one of these chil\u00addren of tomorrow. And now you have two chil\u00addren, and you could say they are the chil\u00addren of tomorrow. So I\u2019m wondering how you reflect on seeing chil\u00addren at the fore\u00adfront of a lot of climate change move\u00adments, and having young chil\u00addren your\u00adself, how do you talk about these topics with them and the kind of future you want for them.<br><br><strong>Jocelyn Joe-Strack:<\/strong> Well I\u2019m very concen\u00adtrated on the values with my girls, and belief. Belief in the life of a tree and the dignity and autonomy of a tree. The fact that is has a life, it has feel\u00adings, it has memory. The rocks have memory, believe it or not, and I\u2019m very grateful to be a person to know it be true and to have expe\u00adri\u00adenced the memory of a rock. And so I worry in our society about how we promote our chil\u00addren to not believe, and science is a player in that as well. We tell them to believe in fact, but you know science is a theory too. And so we tell them not to believe in Santa Claus, and the Tooth Fairy, and I think it really damages them moving forward and it discon\u00adnects them from that heart and spirit. So with my girls, I tell them the stories, I connect them with the land. I go to my girls\u2019 kinder\u00adgarten class, and I bring all the students outside, and I tell them each to grab a tree&#8230;I say, OK, you stand with this tree, you hold its hand and now you breathe. I say you breathe in, and then breathe out. And be quiet and see if you can hear the tree breathe in and breathe out with you. Because it breathes in what you breathe out and you breathe in what it breathes out. And it\u2019s just the nicest thing to help the chil\u00addren to realize how connected and belong they are with the trees, so that\u2019s what I\u2019m trying to protect the most with my chil\u00addren is their belief.And then in my work with youth, I work a lot with teenagers and with people in their twen\u00adties. I think the twen\u00adties are very much forma\u00adtive years of confu\u00adsion, so I just try to give a little bit of advice and stability to those that are confused. But one of greatest things I can give them is their sense of belonging and purpose and meaning in this life. And for us, connec\u00adtion with the culture and this greater cause of \u201cTogether Today for our Chil\u00addren Tomorrow\u201d and becoming care\u00adtakers and our oblig\u00ada\u00adtion to steward the land. It\u2019s very mean\u00adingful and fulfilling. It\u2019s the greatest thing I can give them rather than our educa\u00adtion system which expects them to either sit at a desk or work on machines or to work in resource extrac\u00adtion\u2026it\u2019s very hard to find mean\u00adingful purpose.
