In 1969, they first tried out the strategy with street exhi\u00adbi\u00adtions enti\u00adtled \u201cPr\u00e9sence Plas\u00adtique\u201d in public plazas in Marrakesh and Casablanca, and as of 1978 they turned the small town of Asilah in North Morocco into a lab for art in the public realm. He had quit the \u201cSouf\u00adfles-Anfas\u201d journal even before it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schirn.de\/en\/schirnmag\/kunst-und-zeitschriftenpublizistik-im-arabischen-20-jahrhundert-casablanca-art-school-context-en\/\" data-type=\"magazin-artikel\" data-id=\"7431\">prohib\u00adited in 1972<\/a>, and its co-founders arrested and had instead started publishing the journal \u201cInte\u00adgral\u201d. The foun\u00adda\u00adtion of the \u201cMoussem\u201d in Asilah should there\u00adfore also be seen against the back\u00adground of the massive polit\u00adical and cultural repres\u00adsion in Morocco. During that time, Melehi, Maraini, and Bena\u00efssa succeeded in founding a major inter\u00adna\u00adtional festival in a small town far away from the centers of power, one that enabled new partic\u00adi\u00adpa\u00adtive art formats and progres\u00adsive debates in the public realm and at the same time enjoyed the support of the monarchy and inter\u00adna\u00adtional patrons, above all from the Gulf states. In its first year, the program was accord\u00adingly diverse and indeed almost over\u00adladen with ideas. Over the course of several weeks that summer there were exhi\u00adbi\u00adtions, concerts, theater perfor\u00admances and film screen\u00adings, rounded out by work\u00adshops and confer\u00adences. As early as the spring, impor\u00adtant artists in Morocco were invited to take part who were also repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtives of the Casablanca Art School or at least consid\u00adered part of its wider circle, and they were asked to design the facades of houses in Asilah. Among them were Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Melehi, Miloud Labied, Mohamed Hamidi, Mohamed Chab\u00e2a, Saad Hassani, Chaibia Talal, Hossein Miloudi, Mohamed Kacimi, and Abder\u00adrah\u00admane Rahoule.<br><br>Their large, very colorful wall paint\u00adings on the white houses in the Medina, the old part of town, became the trade\u00admark of the new festival and the town itself. Most of them were produced in collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with school chil\u00addren, remained on the respec\u00adtive walls for a year, and were then redesigned by the artists who were then invited to partic\u00adi\u00adpate. More\u00adover, from the very begin\u00adning, greater atten\u00adtion was paid to inte\u00adgrating Asilah\u2019s inhab\u00adi\u00adtants into the festival. During the summer, local stores were able to benefit from the thou\u00adsands of visi\u00adtors, money flowed into restoring histor\u00adical build\u00adings and urban infra\u00adstruc\u00adture, an old palace was expanded into a cultural center, and new cultural facil\u00adi\u00adties were set up. This refer\u00adence to local tradi\u00adtions may have been meant to distin\u00adguish the event from the existing inter\u00adna\u00adtional festival and to strengthen the accep\u00adtance of the new by relating it to what was cultur\u00adally estab\u00adlished, in partic\u00adular as regards the wall paint\u00adings which completely changed the face of the town. On the other hand, this cannot conceal the fact that the Asilah Moussem, which is now in its 45th iter\u00ada\u00adtion, has down through the years acquired a highly exclu\u00adsive char\u00adacter; often the self\u00adsame artists were repeat\u00adedly invited to attend, and the festival did little to support younger gener\u00ada\u00adtions of artists and artistic inno\u00adva\u00adtion let alone being open to such trends.<br><br>If, by contrast, we concen\u00adtrate on the early editions of the festival, then it is fair to say that in Asilah some\u00adthing was success\u00adfully prac\u00adticed on a small scale that had already been devel\u00adoped by way of grand ideas in Casablanca: Different arts, styles, origins, and gener\u00ada\u00adtions met one another and made art and culture a deci\u00adsive feature of the town. The \u201cAsilah Cultural Moussem\u201d thus became a compre\u00adhen\u00adsive project driven by cultural poli\u00adtics, turning a small coastal town for a few weeks each summer into a stage and an venue for inter\u00adna\u00adtional encoun\u00adters between artists, writers, and intel\u00adlec\u00adtuals, while also creating a creative and thought space for post\u00adcolo\u00adnial cultural devel\u00adop\u00adments in the African and Arab-influ\u00adenced coun\u00adtries.<br><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div  class='col col-xs-12 ho-pattern-optional-button padding-top-4'>\n\n<div  class='wp-block-ho-buttons '>\n<div class=\"wp-block-ho-buttons-item\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.de\/\"  target=\"\" role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"ho-button is-primary mobile-full-width\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"ho-button-label \">Lorem Ipsum<\/span>\n\t<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Casablanca Art School wanted to make art part of urban life, visible for all, and interacting with the everyday culture of the city.
