Until mid-January of this year, you showed the exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolofcasablanca.com\/\">&#8220;School of Casablanca&#8221;<\/a> at the ifa Gallery Berlin, which was real\u00adized by you and ThinkArt together with the KW Insti\u00adtute for Contem\u00adpo\u00adrary Art (Berlin) in collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with the Sharjah Art Foun\u00adda\u00adtion, the ifa Gallery Berlin, the Goethe Insti\u00adtute Morocco and Zam\u00e2n Books &amp; Curating. What was your first encounter with the Casablanca Art School and what inspired you to under\u00adtake this large-scale research and exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion project?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div  class='col col-md-5 col-md-offset-7 col-xs-11 col-xs-offset-1'>\n\n<div  class='ho-tag is-primary is-small margin-bottom-3'>\t<p class='ho-tag-label'>Salma Lahlou<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>My encounter with the Casablanca Art School dates back to 2015. For the 6th edition of the Marrakech Bien\u00adnial, enti\u00adtled \u201cNot New Now?\u201d (February-June 2016), Fatima-Zahra Lakrissa and I were invited by Reem Fadda to curate an exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion about the school and the people who shaped its new peda\u00adgogy.<br><br>Estab\u00adlished in the 1920s by the French colo\u00adnial author\u00adi\u00adties and offi\u00adcially inau\u00adgu\u00adrated in 1951, l\u2019\u00c9cole munic\u00adi\u00adpale des beaux-arts de Casablanca (the city\u2019s fine art school) played a key role in breaking new ground and reshaping the epis\u00adte\u00admology of cultural disci\u00adplines, carried forward by an entire gener\u00ada\u00adtion of artists, poets, writers, film\u00admakers, archi\u00adtects, play\u00adwrights, and musi\u00adcians. In the 1960s, the school under\u00adwent a phase of renewal spurred by artists like Farid Belkahia (1934\u20132014), Mohammed Chab\u00e2a (1935\u20132013), and Mohamed Melehi (1936\u20132020), the art histo\u00adrian and anthro\u00adpol\u00ado\u00adgist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schirn.de\/en\/schirnmag\/5-fragen-an-toni-maraini-casablanca-art-school-context-en\/\" data-type=\"magazin-artikel\" data-id=\"7485\">Toni Maraini<\/a>, as well as Bert Flint (1931\u20132022), an Afro-Berber art researcher and linguist, and a passionate expert on folk art and rural tradi\u00adtions. They were later joined by three other artists and facil\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtors, Mohamed Ataallah (1939-2014), Mustapha Hafid, and Mohamed Hamidi, who brought together artistic-aesthetic notions with ideas of social reform and eman\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtion to form a joint cultural project. What was then referred to as the Casablanca Art School desig\u00adnates both the insti\u00adtu\u00adtion during its golden age (1964\u20131969) and the aesthetic revo\u00adlu\u00adtion embodied in the works of the artists-tutors.<br><br>Conducting, processing and exhibiting this research became much more than a simple object of study.  It made me aware of a major problem: the failure to pass on whole swathes of our iden\u00adtity. As little is passed on to us, we have to appro\u00adpriate the knowl\u00adedge, gestures and narra\u00adtives that consti\u00adtute our collec\u00adtive memory. I remember being quite upset when I read Abdel\u00adlatif La\u00e2bi&#8217;s &#8220;Le g\u00e2chis&#8221;, published in 1967 in the avant-garde cultural publi\u00adca\u00adtion &#8220;Souf\u00adfles&#8221; in its special issue on the plastic arts in Morocco. I couldn&#8217;t under\u00adstand why this peri\u00adod\u00adical wasn&#8217;t studied at school. Can you imagine that at the \u00c9cole Sup\u00e9rieure des beaux-arts of Casablanca, this founding period of our social, cultural and polit\u00adical iden\u00adtity is not passed on to the students?<br><br>And it is precisely in response to this \u201cfailure to transmit\u201d that we under\u00adtook the &#8220;School of Casablanca&#8221; All of them have conducted research and field studies during a resi\u00addency program in Casablanca. Were there any find\u00adings that stood out for you, and could you tell us a little bit about them and the resi\u00addency program in general?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div  class='col col-md-5 col-md-offset-7 col-xs-11 col-xs-offset-1'>\n\n<div  class='ho-tag is-primary is-small margin-bottom-3'>\t<p class='ho-tag-label'>Salma Lahlou<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>The Resi\u00addency and public programs took place between September 2020 and December 2022. Each partic\u00adi\u00adpant took a crit\u00adical look at one of the issues raised within the school that echoed their own prac\u00adtice, with the aim of posing ques\u00adtions about the legacy of the Casablanca Art School within the current socio-polit\u00adical climate of Casablanca and Morocco.<br><br>I will outline the parts that consti\u00adtute the school\u2019s contri\u00adbu\u00adtion before moving on to the partic\u00adi\u00adpants&#8217; research proposals: The artists and theo\u00adreti\u00adcians of the school posi\u00adtioned them\u00adselves by advo\u00adcating the visceral link between modern artistic produc\u00adtion and plastic tradi\u00adtions; an aesthetic of orna\u00admental abstrac\u00adtion; flat\u00adtening the hier\u00adarchy set up by the French between fine and tradi\u00adtional arts; the aboli\u00adtion of the divide between art and life; a trans\u00adversal approach to art; the status of art as a space for shared knowl\u00adedge and expe\u00adri\u00adence; the role of the artist as the producer of a social and cultural project; making art public by weaving their art into the fabric of the city and greater society.<br><br>I loved so many proposals if not to say all of them. I was partic\u00adu\u00adlarly taken with Manuel Raeder&#8217;s manhole covers and street furni\u00adture, their play on the public&#8217;s uses and projec\u00adtions, where nothing is static. The fiction-reality that Fatima-Zahra Lakrissa imag\u00adined around the epis\u00adte\u00admo\u00adlog\u00adical rupture between Bert Flint and Toni Maraini helped to fill a void around ques\u00adtions of validity and hier\u00adar\u00adchies between acad\u00ade\u00admi\u00adcism and heuris\u00adtics. C\u00e9line Condorelli inscribed the visual language of abstrac\u00adtion as women&#8217;s labour in a monu\u00admental instal\u00adla\u00adtion she produced using carpets collected in Boujaad as the source of her produc\u00adtion, at the same time as setting up a support struc\u00adture for weavers in collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with the erudite carpet dealer and collector Rabii Bibi Alouani. Abdeslam Ziou Ziou teamed up with artists to create a space for the display, recep\u00adtion and discus\u00adsion around the issue of art and psychi\u00adatry, engaging with his father\u2019s work, a psychi\u00ada\u00adtrist who worked with the artists of the Casablanca Art School at the Berrechid psychi\u00adatric insti\u00adtu\u00adtion in 1981. Amina Belghiti looked at the sonic imag\u00adi\u00adnary of the period, listening to the gaps, absences, silences in and around the school. Peter Spill\u00admann made avail\u00adable Marion von Osten&#8217;s archives on Casablanca in a modular container with a signif\u00adi\u00adcant piece called &#8220;la bibiloth\u00e8que de passage&#8221; at ThinkArt. To name but a few.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class='wp-block-ho-pattern ' data-pattern='ho\/text-magazin-interview'>\n\n<div  class='container-fluid margin-bottom-7'>\n\n<div  class='row'>\n\n<div  class='col col-xs-12 col-md-6 col-md-offset-6 padding-bottom-5'>\t<p class='ho-sd-body'><strong>3.<\/strong><br>The video series &#8220;School of Walking&#8221; by the artist duo Bik van der Pol was created as part of that resi\u00addency program and shows city tours with various local cultural workers who present Casablanca as a modern city and creative center where artists of the 1960s and 1970s devel\u00adoped their dreams of a common future. Part of the video series is currently on view in the SCHIRN Rotunda, which is open to the public. What fasci\u00adnated you about the video series?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div  class='col col-md-5 col-md-offset-7 col-xs-11 col-xs-offset-1'>\n\n<div  class='ho-tag is-primary is-small margin-bottom-3'>\t<p class='ho-tag-label'>Salma Lahlou<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>Lies\u00adbeth Bik and Jos van der Pol were among the first resi\u00addents. For them, walking in the city is a natural &#8216;modus operandi&#8217;, as they prac\u00adtice it system\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcally, as a lifestyle. I immersed myself in their prac\u00adtice by studying their body of work, and it was through them that I was truly able to assim\u00adi\u00adlate what art as a social prac\u00adtice implies. And thank\u00adfully so, because I could better under\u00adstand Ruan\u00adgrupa\u2019s Docu\u00admenta!<br><br>In the course of our many discus\u00adsions, Lies\u00adbeth invited me to acti\u00advate another prism and see objects as models of poten\u00adtiality or &#8216;tools for poten\u00adtial&#8217; by inte\u00adgrating the nuance between what objects do versus how objects look.<br><br>Walking has the ability to connect us differ\u00adently to each other, widen our perspec\u00adtives and make us aware of the urban terrain that was acti\u00advated by artists from the outset. It was partic\u00adu\u00adlarly mean\u00adingful to me to invite Hassan Darsi, whom I see as one of the most signif\u00adi\u00adcant socially engaged artist working in Morocco. His work on the Parc de l&#8217;Hermitage was a mile\u00adstone for my gener\u00ada\u00adtion because it disrupted admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtive apathy and enabled local resi\u00addents to reclaim a public park that had been left in a state of complete disarray. Fatima Mazmouz embodied our polit\u00adical resis\u00adtance in an active march to revisit streets named after lesser known histor\u00adical figures whose stories are not often told to younger gener\u00ada\u00adtions. Mohamed Fariji and his project for a collec\u00adtive museum in Casablanca showed how the city neglects its archi\u00adtec\u00adtural assets, letting them rot away while we suffer from a lack of avail\u00adable space for talks, exhi\u00adbi\u00adtions and so on.<br><br>Walking acti\u00advates a different kind of atten\u00adtion because it involves the body, engaging the senses as well as the mind. It bypasses the lecture format, which puts the lecturer at the centre; instead, informal conver\u00adsa\u00adtions abound. It&#8217;s a way of expe\u00adri\u00adencing the city in a different way to the tradi\u00adtional guided city tours. Casablanca is not a single trail. Numerous routes and sections exist, allowing us to forge new bonds and provoke unex\u00adpected discus\u00adsions between walkers, which opens up new perspec\u00adtives.
