She liked to recount stories from her life that suggest a biograph\u00adical inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion of her works: for example, when she uses the name of the psychi\u00adatric women\u2019s clinic where her mother stayed temporarily in the title of her work \u201cI due Pini\u201d, or names works after members of her family, whose tragic lives she was all too ready to describe. That said, it often remains unclear whether her anec\u00addotes are poetic exten\u00adsions of her art or whether her works are poetic treat\u00adments of her life. Rama herself once said, \u201cevery\u00adthing and nothing\u201d was \u201cbiograph\u00adical\u201d. A scandalous case for censorship<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ho-div\">\t<p class='ho-sd-body'>One partic\u00adu\u00adlarly compelling but unver\u00adi\u00adfied anec\u00addote about the rebel\u00adlious artist relates to her first solo exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion. According to Rama, the show in 1945 in Turin which report\u00adedly presented mainly erotic water\u00adcolors caused a scandal that resulted in its imme\u00addiate closure. The depic\u00adtion of naked, partly frag\u00admented female bodies in sexual poses came to the atten\u00adtion of the Vatican, which imme\u00addi\u00adately lodged a complaint. The situ\u00ada\u00adtion was quite unac\u00adcept\u00adable for the conser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive author\u00adi\u00adties and this, Rama suggested, ulti\u00admately led to the exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion being censored. She changed her style virtu\u00adally every ten years: begin\u00adning with the early figu\u00adra\u00adtive, erotic water\u00adcolors and almost face\u00adless anti-portraits, then in the 1950s as a member of the Movi\u00admento Arte Conc\u00adreta (MAC) she initially turned to abstrac\u00adtion, before devoting herself to various mate\u00adrial exper\u00adi\u00adments in the 1960s and 1970s. Her \u201cbrico\u00adlages\u201d, a term her friend Edoardo Sanguineti had adopted from Claude L\u00e9vi-Strauss and applied to Rama\u2019s new series of works, expanded the idea of classic collage to include the free use of spray paint, adhe\u00adsives and assem\u00adbled objects. This inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive approach set new stan\u00addards in contem\u00adpo\u00adrary art. In the 1970s, Rama continued her mate\u00adrial exper\u00adi\u00adments, by using bicycle and car tire tubes for the \u201cGomme\u201d body of work. One reason for this were the patri\u00adar\u00adchal struc\u00adtures in the art busi\u00adness, which for a long time made it diffi\u00adcult for female artists like her to achieve greater visi\u00adbility.
