From November 8, 2024, to February 9, 2025, the SCHIRN is dedi\u00adcating a compre\u00adhen\u00adsive retro\u00adspec\u00adtive to the artist\u2019s oeuvre from 1959 to the present.<br><br>Haacke has shaped the devel\u00adop\u00adment of polit\u00adical art like no other artist of his gener\u00ada\u00adtion. His direct and theo\u00adret\u00adi\u00adcally concise works are simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adously poetic, metaphor\u00adical, ecolog\u00adical, and in many respects extremely contem\u00adpo\u00adrary. On several occa\u00adsions, his contro\u00adver\u00adsial artistic contri\u00adbu\u00adtions to current debates were censored from exhi\u00adbi\u00adtions. Artis\u00adti\u00adcally, he has pursued a variety of strate\u00adgies, becoming involved early on in the fields of ecology and natural sciences, drawing on approaches from the ZERO group, Mini\u00admalism, Concep\u00adtual Art, public art, and poster art, among others. As a central pioneer of Insti\u00adtu\u00adtional Critique within Concep\u00adtual Art, his works exam\u00adined orders or systems and presented them compar\u00ada\u00adtively. As a kind of \u201ccounter-monu\u00adment\u201d to the impe\u00adrial repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion of power by the statues in this square, Haacke\u2019s 4.5-meter-tall bronze sculp\u00adture shows a horse skeleton based on a study from George Stubbs\u2019s book \u201cThe Anatomy of the Horse\u201d. The ticker of the Frank\u00adfurt Stock Exchange is trans\u00admitted live via an elec\u00adtronic display on a loop at the front of the skeleton\u2019s thigh bone. Haacke\u2019s early projects were influ\u00adenced by his friend\u00adship with Otto Piene and his contact with the D\u00fcssel\u00addorf-based ZERO group. During this period, he partic\u00adi\u00adpated in numerous pioneering exhi\u00adbi\u00adtions on Kinetic Art, Op Art, Concep\u00adtual Art, and Land Art. Although Haacke\u2019s work had over\u00adlaps with many inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive move\u00adments of the 1960s, he did not feel that he really belonged to any of them. He wasn\u2019t inter\u00adested in specific mate\u00adrials or styles, but in the funda\u00admental connec\u00adtions between phys\u00adical, biolog\u00adical, and social systems. The earliest works shown at the SCHIRN include the painting \u201cCe n\u2019est pas la voie lact\u00e9e (This Is Not the Milky Way)\u201d (1960) and Haacke\u2019s reliefs with mirror foil created starting in 1961. The latter already testi\u00adfied to an interest in inter\u00adac\u00adtions with the viewer, which would become increas\u00adingly impor\u00adtant. Haacke\u2019s first photo\u00adgraphic work, \u201cPhoto\u00adgraphic Notes, docu\u00admenta 2\u201d (1959), also depicts visitor behavior in exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion spaces. One of the artist\u2019s signa\u00adture works is the \u201cLarge Conden\u00adsa\u00adtion Cube\u201d (1963\u201367), a cube of acrylic glass enclosing a small amount of water. Haacke also called these cubes \u201cweather boxes\u201d and later made analo\u00adgies between mete\u00ado\u00adro\u00adlog\u00adical and polit\u00adical climates. This linking of different systems is char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adistic of Haacke\u2019s method. The tran\u00adsi\u00adtion from object (or sculp\u00adture) to process is also evident in his artistic prac\u00adtice. Further \u201cexper\u00adi\u00admental setups\u201d in the museum inte\u00adrior demon\u00adstrate the water cycle (\u201cCircu\u00adla\u00adtion\u201d, 1969) by means of evap\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion, conden\u00adsa\u00adtion, crys\u00adtal\u00adliza\u00adtion, lique\u00adfac\u00adtion, other air move\u00adments (\u201cBlue Sail\u201d, 1964\u201365), or growth processes (\u201cGrass Grows\u201d, 1969). In 1971, \u201cShapolsky et al. Manhattan Real Estate Hold\u00adings, a Real-Time Social System, as of May 1, 1971\u201d trig\u00adgered a cultural-polit\u00adical scandal and artistic protests against censor\u00adship. Using photographs, tabular infor\u00adma\u00adtion, and plans of 142 prop\u00ader\u00adties on the Lower East Side and in the Harlem district of Manhattan, Haacke exposed the dubious concen\u00adtra\u00adtion of real estate and related prac\u00adtices of the Shapolsky group. In 1993, he repre\u00adsented the German Pavilion at the Venice Bien\u00adnale, for which he was awarded the Golden Lion together with Nam June Paik. His sensa\u00adtional contri\u00adbu\u00adtion \u201cGERMANIA\u201d presented a debris field of marble floor slabs inside the room, which had been remod\u00adeled in 1939 under the National Social\u00adists. Haacke devel\u00adoped the large-scale work \u201cDER BEV\u00d6LKERUNG (TO THE POPU\u00adLA\u00adTION)\u201d (2000) as a perma\u00adnent instal\u00adla\u00adtion for one of the two inner court\u00adyards of the German Reich\u00adstag building in Berlin. The deci\u00adsion to award the commis\u00adsion to Haacke became the subject of inten\u00adsive public debates in the Bundestag. The illu\u00admi\u00adnated letters installed on the floor refer to the inscrip\u00adtion \u201cDEM DEUTSCHEN VOLKE\u201d (To The German People) on the gable of the Reich\u00adstag building. Each member of the Bundestag was invited to contribute 50 kilo\u00adgrams of soil from their constituency; the seeds embedded in the soil grew into a variety of living vege\u00adta\u00adtion, which now frames the letters today. Haacke\u2019s poster project \u201cWe (All) Are the People\u201d, which was created for docu\u00admenta 14 (2017) in Kassel and Athens and has since been shown many times, can be read as a reac\u00adtion to the rise of anti-migrant senti\u00adment in recent decades.
