He had been invited with ten other artists to render visible the seams in the system that had been torn open with the fall of the Wall in a city that was not yet reunited. Like many others, during his weeks in Berlin Haacke cycled along the aban\u00addoned line of watch\u00adtowers and through the \u201ckilling zone\u201d. And while the border equip\u00adment and instal\u00adla\u00adtions were still being removed in Berlin, he concluded a contract with the East German National People\u2019s Army and thus delayed the demo\u00adli\u00adtion of a watch\u00adtower in Kreuzberg. He then went about changing its appear\u00adance signif\u00adi\u00adcantly, so from afar it now seemed an unusual struc\u00adture: From September 1 through October 7, 1990, a gleaming neon-blue Mercedes star rotated on the tower, protected by mesh. The space beneath the tinted glass windows was embla\u00adzoned with two slogans: \u201cKunst bleibt Kunst\u201d (\u201cArt remains art\u201d) and \u201cBereit sein ist alles\u201d (\u201cIt\u2019s all about being prepared\u201d). What had once been the \u201ckilling zone\u201d became an exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion area for five weeks, and the watch\u00adtower morphed into an artwork enti\u00adtled \u201cDie Frei\u00adheit wird jetzt einfach gespon\u00adsert \u2013 aus der Portokasse\u201d (\u201cFreedom is now simply being spon\u00adsored \u2013 for peanuts\u201d).<br><br>Haacke\u2019s watch\u00adtower was part of the exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion project \u201cDie Endlichkeit der Frei\u00adheit Berlin 1990\u201d (\u201cThe Fini\u00adtude of Freedom Berlin 1990\u201d). It was a large-scale cultural project of the polit\u00adical unifi\u00adca\u00adtion period in the heart of a no-man\u2019s land when it came to legal certainty. It was the only exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion project of this scale that East and West Germany jointly financed and real\u00adized in 1990. \u201cDer Spiegel\u201d maga\u00adzine called it the \u201cmost impor\u00adtant exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion\u201d of the year. The ambiguous title dreamed up by play\u00adwright Heiner M\u00fcller reflects the ambiva\u00adlences of the day: \u201cEndlich Frei\u00adheit\u201d \u2013 freedom, at long last \u2013 implies joy, given the polit\u00adical upheaval; \u201cfini\u00adtude\u201d at the same time reflects its limited time\u00adline. The tower symbol\u00adized the East, the star the West. The montage posed various ques\u00adtions: How can the different systems unite? Can indi\u00advidual elements be combined? Or will misun\u00adder\u00adstand\u00adings arise and like\u00adwise unin\u00adten\u00adtional over\u00adlaps? The posi\u00adtioning of the star on top suggests the prophecy that the economic (control) system will replace the prior polit\u00adical one.<br><br>In the summer of 1990, Haacke\u2019s \u201cWatch\u00adtower\u201d project high\u00adlighted the predom\u00adi\u00adnant posi\u00adtion of the West and the capi\u00adtal\u00adiza\u00adtion of the East. In fact, he outfitted the tower with a symbol of consumerism precisely at the very moment the Wall itself became a consumer commodity. On June 20, 1990, Sotheby\u2019s in Monte Carlo auctioned off 81 indi\u00advidual sections of the Wall for up to 30,000 Deutschmarks each, with the total proceed\u00adings coming to two million Deutschmarks.<br><br>The star specif\u00adi\u00adcally points to the activ\u00adi\u00adties of the Daimler-Benz corpo\u00adra\u00adtion in Berlin in 1990: In the summer of that year, the company had acquired prime real estate on Pots\u00addamer Platz for a tenth of the esti\u00admated value. This was a matter of public debate as early as 1990, and Haacke\u2019s \u201cWatch\u00adtower\u201d locked into this debate, crit\u00adi\u00adcizing the company and the over\u00adhasty actions of the Berlin munic\u00adipal govern\u00adment. Two years later, the corpo\u00adra\u00adtion had to make a subse\u00adquent payment of 33.8 million euros, as the monop\u00ado\u00adlies commis\u00adsion had declared that the purchase price broke the law. An ironic adver\u00adtising column, there\u00adfore, for Daimler-Benz: This inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion of the watch\u00adtower is supported by the slogans \u201cKunst bleibt Kunst\u201d and \u201cBereit sein ist alles\u201d, which drew on two of the corpo\u00adra\u00adtion\u2019s then ad slogans and brought to mind the East German boy-scout motto.<br><br>Finally, the star clearly alluded to another Berlin building: On the roof of the Europa Center at the top of Kurf\u00fcrsten\u00addamm, a corre\u00adsponding, if far larger, Mercedes star still rotates to this day. Only later did I realize that in the year of my birth, 1989, with the fall of the Wall I was given the gift of freedom. \u201cWir sind das Volk\u201d (\u201cWe are the people\u201d) \u2013 this was the slogan chanted by the demon\u00adstra\u00adtors marching along the Leipziger Ring in 1989, loudly demanding the renewal of East Germany. As part of the Hans Haacke retro\u00adspec\u00adtive at the SCHIRN, the decen\u00adtral piece is now also present in Frank\u00adfurt\u2019s urban space.<br><br>Where Haacke\u2019s Mercedes star illu\u00admi\u00adnated the no-man\u2019s land killing zone back in 1990, in recent years a new resi\u00adden\u00adtial district has arisen.
