Hybrid creatures, faceless science-fiction figures, and reliefs crafted from delicate honeycombs, soft limewood, and curved concrete: [Anna Hulačová](https://www.schirn.de/en/exhibition/anna-hulacova/)’s sculptures combine influences from Surrealism, Socialist Realism, and Czech folk art. In her SCHIRN interview, the artist talks about the ideas and experiences behind her work.

Created in collaboration with her bee colonies, Anna Hulačová’s sculptures merge concrete and honeycomb, the organic and the technological, nature and machine. The result is a body of work that weaves together mythology, communist history, and personal experience — including her upbringing on a farmyard.

#### „I try to create deliberate contrasts in each piece. For example, natural or organic versus the industrial; modern versus ancient; new versus old world; and social moods, like utopian versus distopian. For me, it is a kind of struggle and at the same time a subconscious effort to balance everything in my work.“
