As part of an entertaining and hot affair between Deutsches Museum für Schwarze Unterhaltung und Black Music (German Museum for Black Entertainment and Black Music) and Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt they slip between the sheets. "This is where the Magic happens". The fruit of the liaison is manifested in an exhibition object and an accompanying event: Experts of every ilk come together to discuss the various aspects of interracial love, to make music, fantasize, flirt, argue and make up again. Kara Walker's "Allegory of the Obama Years" (2019) is both a reaction to the political situation in the United States and an engagement with Barack Obama's official presidential portrait, made by Kehinde Wiley in 2018. Looking at the history of presidential portraits, the lecture will offer perspectives on Kara Walker's aesthetic strategies.
