The Berlin Art Week has begun. We present week‘s highlights, including one or the other drink after a full day.

TUESDAY

In the evening
Miete Strom Instagram, from 5 PM

Before the official start of the Berlin Art Week, things are kicked off by the action “Miete Strom Instagram” (rent electricity Instagram). Initiated by artists Raul Walch and Erik Winkler, the group exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the current living and working conditions of Berlin-based artists. With a changing program, including a panel discussion with Ahmet Ögüt on September 30 at 6 PM.

WEDNESDAY

During the day
SYMPOSIUM: WE ARE NOT YOUR DEMOISELLES, KW Berlin, 10 AM – 5 PM

Candice Breitz, Melissa Gira Grant, Änne Söll and Nosipho Vidima talk about the stigmatization of sex work in the context of the exhibition CANDICE BREITZ: SEX WORK (Salon Berlin of Museum Frieda Burda). Moderated by Monopol editor-in-chief Elke Buhr, the symposium includes a visit to the exhibition and an introduction to the work of Candice Breitz by the artist herself.

In the evening
JULIAN CHARRIÈRE, “AS WE USED TO FLOAT“, Berlinische Galerie, 6 – 11 PM

Julian Charrière, whose work is also featured in the upcoming exhibition WILDERNESS at the SCHIRN, has won the GASAG art prize. He has developed a multimedia spatial installation for Berlinische Galerie that takes viewers under the surface of the Pacific Ocean. At Berghain he presents his film “An Invitation to Disappear” at a late hour, followed by the release party of the accompanying album by producer Inland (alias Ed Davenport).

BEATRICE GIBSON, KW PRODUCTION SERIES, Julia Stoschek Collection, 7 – 10 PM

The Berlin branch of Julia Stoschek Collection is located not far from Berlinische Galerie. Beatrice Gibson’s new film “I Hope I’m Loud When I’m Dead” (16mm, 20 min.) is being shown here in the context of the KW Production Series. The British artist was featured as a Double Feature guest just last year – her new work is bound to be exciting.

ROBERT LONGO, “EVERYTHING FALLS APART“, CAPITAIN PETZEL, 6 – 8.30 PM

Capitain Petzel kicks off with a hero of the pictures generation before most of the other galleries in Berlin open their exhibitions on Friday. While Robert Longo’s first exhibition at the gallery was the highlight of Gallery Weekend 2012, his new show promises to be gigantic.

SHOTSPOTTER 2 - BLURRY BOUNDARIES, BAR BABETTE, from 8 PM

Very practical: Bar Babette is located directly opposite Capitain Petzel, making it almost impossible to miss the last exhibition at the former beauty salon. Sadly, at the end of September the operators have to vacate the venue that has been so important for the Berlin art scene. Even better, then, that the last group show held here includes artists from Frankfurt.
