There’s nothing like warm summer nights, long conversations and a refreshing drink! We‘ll tell you about the artists we always wanted to meet and serve the matching drink.

INGRID PFEIFFER, SCHIRN CURATOR

Which artist would you like to have a drink with on a warm summer evening?

Leonora Carrington, a fantastic artist! Her magical figures and mystical sceneries are extraordinary – I could talk to her about them all night long.

And where would you meet her?

The Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacán. At the age of 25, the British artist relocated from the USA to Mexico, where she met her later husband, photo journalist Emérico (Chiki) Weisz. She spent the rest of her life with him in Mexico. Unfortunately, Leonora Carrington is repeatedly reduced to her relationship with Max Ernst, while her work and life was so much richer...

Which ingredient is essential for your drink?

Tequila of course!

CALZADA DE LOS MUERTOS

Jens Seidl, guest bartender at Frankfurt’s Seven Svans & The Tiny Cup, is a specialist in forgotten classics and modern craft cocktails. He creates the perfect drink for every meeting. For the encounter with Leonora Carrington he created the Tequila-induced “Calzada de los Muertos”:

INGREDIENTS

30ml Tequila Añejo

20ml Cynar (an Italian artichoke liqueur)

20ml Cassis (blackcurrant juice)

30ml fresh pink grapefruit juice

10ml fresh lime juice

1 fresh organic egg white

PREPARATION

Combine all ingredients in a shaker and shake thoroughly with ice. Strain into a coupe – you must have a fluffy foam top on the drink (you can shake the drink again without ice to improve the texture of the foam – the so-called “dry shake”). Express the aromatic oils of a grapefruit peel over the drink and sprinkle a line of black salt across the top.

I was particularly grateful for this request – Tequila and other agave-based spirits are currently among my favorite spirits (as is rum), and the magical scenery of the Pyramid of the Moon gets the imagination going. I visualize serving this drink on top of the pyramid, the dark night captured in the drink's body, the moonlight reflected in the white foamy top, and the black salt mirroring the Calzada de los Muertos laying at our feet, the Avenue of the Dead that connects most of the sights of Teotihuacán. This is a complex drink that combines sweet agave and fruit with bitter artichoke, freshness from citrus, salt and a creamy mouthfeel.
