THOMAS HIRSCHHORN. DOUBLE GARAGE
10. December - 11. January 2004

Thomas Hirschhorn’s complex event spaces have attracted great attention since the mid-1990s. Like all works by the Swiss artist, the installation “Double Garage,” revealing social contexts, confronts us with the real world. The garage, an individual workroom, is a metaphor for coming to grips with the violence, war, death, and destruction delivered to our living rooms day after day. The production assembles the tools of a handy man’s workshop including pin-up girls, a model railroad scenery with circling trains and huge mushrooms, and objects and pictures of destroyed cities, hurt men, and veiled women. Marcus Steinweg’s philosophical reflections on Nietzsche in the form of words and text passages to be found here and there focus on the relations between power and responsibility and are aimed at reactivating Nietzsche’s explosive relevance to the present political discussion.
